@HappySteve , @Christofle , anyone,

Did anyone buy the double monk strap shoe from this season? @MacawGuy posted this query re sizing (hope it’s okay to link here; I figured more guys might see it). They’re gorgeous, so I also texted my former SA, a guy who loves shoes, to ask.

If anyone answers on @MacawGuy ’s thread then the question and answer can be kept together lol

Haha thank you so much, of course I don’t mind! I’d love to hear what your SA says, and I’d definitely love to hear if your DH ends up getting a pair - shoe twins :biggrin:

Hello! Just got back from Paris and of course had to get my Hermes fix. Went to FSH first and lucked out as it didn’t seem too busy!

Got myself a pair of sneakers (Katana) and another videpoches in Noir because I love the one I already have in gold.

Holding out for a hac a dos next in a fun colour!

Congrats! I am assuming this was a special order? If so, are you comfortable sharing more about your journey to the bag? I am hoping to start my journey to a special order Birkin 35 or 40 soon!

Hello,

You're correct, it's a special order; the order was submitted last year and arrived after about 7 months.
I'll share as much as I can about my time with the store but the caveat is that I'm not a VIP and much of my experience is unlikely to apply to the current day. For context, I'm male and based in Asia. I've been a client with my local store (a flagship) for the past 12 years. More importantly, I started during a time when there wasn't such a fever pitch frenzy over Hermes. The store was a lot quieter and the number of guys who shopped Hermes was minimal. I mention these points because I do think they helped, unlike in post-Covid times where competition is insane.

I started with messenger bags and then briefcases (one of my earliest posts on TPF was when I purchased a bicolour Steve in taupe and blue izmir clemence), followed by anything that caught my fancy (agendas, watches, ties, home items). I suppose it helped that I'm a geek and I'd research the origin story of the item I was considering and history of the colours and have such geeked out conversations with my then SA. Soon, my profile was transferred to the assistant store manager, with whom I had many mutual and long discussions about leather type, design history, pros and cons, etc, even if I wasn't buying anything. For me, Hermes was an intellectual endeavour to distract me from the grind of my profession; many people probably aren't as bothered about the brand in this way, which made it easy to be unique. Also, I think that the store was a lot calmer then and they could afford the time to entertain someone with my proclivities. Regardless, I was neither consumed by the brand nor let it define my personality. The occasional indulgence in nice leather bags was simply to accompany my adventures in life. About 2 years in, I was offered the opportunity to place my first SO. However, over the decade I found myself purchasing a lot less, because many of the current designs don't appeal to me and I'm turned off by the crowds in the store. How many bags does one truly need anyway? Nevertheless, I do visit occasionally and it helps that some of the SAs have been there since I first started in 2013, so we all know each other. Familiarity is strong currency.

Ultimately, despite my lack of consistent spending, I'm fortunate to have been offered 3 regular "QBs" (I really dislike this acronym), 3 SOs, and 1 Horizon opportunity. But a black B40 always alluded me somehow, even though my store had placed a podium order for it several times. Also, I don't buy resale, unless it's vintage box calf. So, I decided to use my 2024 SO quota to order a black birkin. To me, the horseshoe is a nice little prize, for having waited nearly a decade for my black bag.

Best of luck, and really, just be calm and enjoy the brand for what it's worth.
