Baroness is a title, it is the female equivalent of Baron.

The title is bestowed on people by the monarch.


From Wikipedia:

Baron is a specific title of nobility or a more generic feudal qualification. The word baron comes from French baron, itself from Frankish baro meaning "freeman, warrior"; it merged with cognate Old English beorn meaning "nobleman." Ultimately it seems to mean a burden bearer.

In the British peerage system, barons rank below viscounts, being the lowest rank in the peerage.


Ex UK Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher ( :yucky: ) has been made a Baroness.

Lovely....I love diamonds more than bags...I now some think the pieces are way too OTT...but hey...I have a fabulous jewler...he has reset lots of my great grandmothers pieces and grandmothers...a little updating never hurt!!!

Here is some of Queen Victoria's jewelry:

She wore this on her gown her wedding day. Prince Albert gave it to her the day before.

This was given to Victoria to celebrate her 50th Jubilee on the throne. (Women of the British Empire donated between a penny and a pound and part of the money was used to erect an equestrian statue of Prince Albert. The rest was used to get this necklace.)
The center part can be detatched and worn as a pendant. (It could, but it never was.)
