I never (usually) pay any shipping because of the fact that I write it into my offers, which the sellers then accept. Most of the items that I win I only pay the negotiated price and then the seller adds free shipping. The only times I usually pay for shipping are when the item is small, like a wallet or fob. However, in all offers, I ask for free shipping and I would say 7/10 times the sellers accept.
Edit: I just bought a mermaid fob that I've been dying to get and I made an offer with shipping included and the seller accepted. It may sound silly, but I try to come across as overly nice in my message. I always start with a nice greeting, always say thanks and (don't laugh) end with a smiley face.

I think that before I added them, my offers came off as way more aggressive... but I feel like with the smiley faces, especially at the end they are more inclined to think, "Well, she seems nice." Also, it's so hard to infer tone over the web, so even if I say, "Thanks for considering!" they could infer it as "THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING." when I was only trying to say it nicely; the smiley helps convey the niceness.
