Should you wind a Rolex?

I tried winding mine over 40+ times, but it's still not moving. I didn't wear it for a about two weeks--the longest I've ever gone without wearing it.

What now?

The only thing about winding my Rolex SA warned me about when I bought mine is that I have to make sure that I wind the date dial first, to the day before the actual day before I wind the time dial.

To illustrate:
Let's say it's currently 0800 on 10 November and my watch stopped at 0800 on 7th November. So I'll first (i) turn the date dial from 7th to 9th November (ii) pull out the time dial and start turning the time dial so that it will hit 0000 whereby the date display will automatically change from 9th Nov to 10th Nov and then (iii) continue winding till 0800 10th Nov.

does this make any sense to anyone? I have been doing it since I got the watch for my 21st birthday so I will feel reaaally dumb if I am the only one out there who does this religiously when my watch stops! :P

There is a rolexforum that I go to all the time for questions like these......it's rolexforums.com & they show you how to wind watches the RIGHT way....& what's good or not for your rolex. Check it out!

Ok thanks! I wore it all day hoping it would come back to life, but no luck.

And yes, made of dreams, that makes sense, but I didn't do it that way. I turned it to the right time and date, and then shook it. When it didn't come back to life, I wound it 40+ times. I hope I didn't do any damage!

I just got my Rolex back from the service centre not too long ago, and there is a little note with it that says that you might have to wind it 40 times (exact number!) before it is worn.

This probably sounds idiotic, but it says to wind the crown "clockwise." Does that mean that I turn the crown AWAY from me, or towards me? Or does that mean to turn the crown so that the hands move in a clockwise direction?

Also, do you wind your watch when the crown is fully pulled out, or when it is in date-adjust mode (halfway out)? I tried searching the rolexforums site but that wasn't clear to me.
