I wear gold jewelry and I have both gold hardware and pallidium. I personally think either or is fine.

I used not to mix but am starting to. To me, its ok to have one item that is different from the rest of the jewellery. And black goes really well with gold. Like you said, very very classic. Black with PHW has a more modern feel to it. I say go take a look, see if it sings to you. Satisfy yourself.
