My story is this, its actually quite funny...and will show my love of two things Hip hop and coach. Now first off, I am from NYC, Queens, and I adore Good Hip Hop, pretty much...nothing made in the last 10-15 years...we are talking the height of great rap, with KRS 1, De La Soul and of course Tribe Called Quest. I am 27, so the good stuff is my generation. All the crap out now, is not good rap, let alone memorable. One of the best songs to come out from my youth was called Hey Lover, by LL Cool J. In the song he is in love with this cute, sophisticated girl, who is mistreated by her boyfriend. And in one verse he says

" a coach bag in your hand I was laying in the coup with my hat turned back we caught eyes for a moment, and that was that so skated off, as you strolled off"

I was young, and I said what is a Coach bag?? Fast forward years later, I am having this conversation with my friends older sister, she tells me OMG my BF bought me a Coach! I say..what is a Coach bag? She tells me, one of the best brands out there, not a bragging, or a self centered brand, its just good quality, at a good price. it may be expensive now, but they last forever. So on my 18th birthday I asked my mom to get me a Coach. She did, and then about three later the strap broke. (super thin strap) It was a signature bag, I took it into to Coach, and they said no problem! We will fix it for free! I was shocked! So...the great customer service got me, then the quality, and I never looked back. I have never been into buying bags just cause everyone wears them, and I don't think more or less of someone who rocks a brand.

I look at LV and it is pretty, it is...but it just doesn't wear well to me. It doesn't age well, plus being creative with color and leathers the way coach does is so fun.

And there you go. Also...come on its LL! (sexyyy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um99r6sgspY

I think I've told my story before a LONG time ago, but here goes.

In college (85-90) I started noticing some gals carrying very 'classic' leather bags w/ clean lines and I fell in love. I don't know how I made the association that those were "Coach" bags, because I'm sure I was too shy to ask anyone what purse they were carrying (my stance has changed this then though, I ask people all the time, and heck even tell them what style their bag is, if they're not sure themselves, LOL!) but I just knew I had to have one!
My mom and I used to go outlet shopping a few times a year in Rehoboth Beach DE, and on one of our journeys, we noticed that a Coach outlet had opened there, I was in HEAVEN!!!

My mom LOVED being at the ocean, so when we were there, she always wanted to go to the beach and I always wanted to go to the outlets, so we compromised and did a little of both on these trips! She would usually buy me one purse for my birthday and one for Christmas, and if I was able to scrounge up enough of my own money, I would get an accessory to go with. Many years later an outlet shopping center opened very close to my house (Leesburg Premium Outlets) and I found myself going every few months or so to check out their wares.

My obsession was pretty much in check until I joined TPF and it's been downhill ever since (but uphill in other ways since I got to 'meet' so many other handbag lovers and see so many beautiful bags) and it got so bad I was going up to the outlet a few times a week. I'm really trying to rein it back in and try to only go once every two weeks now, but its a struggle hearing about all the new deletes hitting the outlets on the boards here!!

Sadly, my outlet/beach buddy (mom) suddenly passed away in 2004, but I always fondly remember our trips to Rehoboth Beach/outlets whenever I pull out the classic bags she bought me over the years.
:hugs:Hugs to you!! At least you still have those Special bags and Memories to hold close to you Always!!

i loved reading the stories shared here; this is a fun thread.

mine is really simple. in high school some of my friends were off buying burberry and louis vuitton but having never brought an expensive accessory that is not technology (changed out my cell phone every year sometimes twice, had cd, md, then mp3..so forth)

i started off with coach. my first purchase was in 2002; a slim hampton's envelope in black.

i wasn't really into coach then, i just wanted a nice wallet..and see what my friends were buzzing about.

two years later, the clothing store i was working at was closing, and my manager was being recruited by a coach manager (they knew each other prior) and i sort of 'jumped' ship so to speak.

i knew virtually nothing about coach, didn't own any (really) designer accessories..but i got hired and the within first five minutes of being on the floor i sold a pair of sunglasses (cos i commented on how the butterfly crystals on the side looked really cute on her..which is true) and after my seasonal stint i was asked to stay as an associate.

getting to know the company, i honestly have to say that if their designs appeal to you, its one of the best for your buck (esp at the outlets) you can get.

and while i have (sort of moved on) to other brands i always come back because they have a few pieces every season that grabs my attention..

i used to be only into clothes..now i am broadening that to include handbags.

Dawn,
I got hooked on COACH a long time ago when I saw this lady carrying one of those all leather Bleecker shoulder bags with the huge buckles and thick straps.
Naturally, since I am NOT the one who actually carries the bags I was not able to dive into COACH head first. Then about two years ago my wife got ill and I went on eBay and bought her a very "vintage" small tan leather shoulder bag. It made her smile because she had never gotten a "designer" bag before....well!!!! That smile started the obsession for me....in a very short time I was really digging into the brand and it got to the point where some days I was showing up to her work to pick her up with two or three new bags in the back of the car.
I have to giver her credit though...she did try and resist...but through constant feeding of my OCD I was able to suck her into it and now she is spending her time fretting about outfits matching her bags instead of the other way around...well that and trying to make sure that everyone gets a turn to come down and get used. Since she talks to her bags and calls them by name it can get confusing when she has two of the same name style...and really bad when she gets more than that (the Madison’s are really bad...we must have at least 5 of them)
I am in therapy for my OCD but I dont think it is sticking quite yet...she is on an "All-Girls-Only-Cruise" to the Caribbean for the week and I already have her Welcome home present waiting for her....Stopped by the Leesburg Outlets on Monday and found a "Flagship Silver Metallic" shoulder bag and a wonderful large brown leather Devon shoulder bag with the leather strip stitching. I walked around with those bags in my hands for over an hour trying to figure out which one I should get....because neither of them was inexpensive.
I knew that we had more than enough of the silver metallic bags (my wife has them layered on the front of our bedroom door) but I had never seen anything like this bag before. Besides the unique look it is absolutely HUGE inside...something my wife really needs....err...likes in her bags.
I had to get the Devon because it is simply an awesome bag and my wife was drooling over it when we saw it in the full price store. To find it where I did was simply shocking...including to a district manager type who did not know how either of the bags found their way down to the Outlet store...
SOOOOO My wife is going to be in for a serious problem when she gets home because she is going to have to decide which bags gets carried first and then find a way not to hurt the other bags feelings of rejection for not being the chosen one! Hehehehehehehe! THAT is one of the main reasons I do this. Its so much fun to shop with her...she picks out an armful of the bags...spends a LONG time narrowing it down to two or three and then agonizing over which one to get and I settle things by buying both of them when she gets that far or encouraging her to do it for herself....
As soon as I get my required postings in I plan on taking photos of her collection and posting them. My wife would never do it because she is not the type to do it....ME on the other hand....I think she should be proud of her collection and willing to show it off!

Opps...forgot to mention that it doesnt help that there are two Outlet stores within easy driving distance of my home and at least four regular stores in my area that I can think of off the top of my head...although I am sure that there are at least four or five more around here. ( I live in the burbs of Washington DC) Thanks!

This thread is so much fun, I loved reading everyone's stories :D

I actually got sucked into Coach by a fake though I didn't know it at the time. I'd always loved handbags (what girl doesn't?) but never dared to look at Coach except ogling the Coach counter at the department store from a distance as I bought my bags. I always loved leather bags and eventually got a nice D&B bag that I loved, then once a year I would buy another (I still love D&B). Then a few years back my sister came to visit and she was carrying this really pretty denim patchwork bag, I complimented her on the bag and she said it was a Coach. I thought if my sister had a Coach maybe I really could afford one, so I started looking every time I went to Macy's, but I still hesitated to splurge so much. I also haunted ebay and finally saw an ivory leather Carly that I thought was the most beautiful purse I'd ever seen so I bought her. I still have that Carly and she's still one of my favorites. But I joined tPF to get her authenticated ... I had planned to carry her for a year and then get a new bag once a year like before, but seeing all the lovely bags here and learning so much I was hooked, and now I have way too many Coach bags but I love them all. Then last year when I was visiting with my sister I mentioned that patchwork bag she'd had and she said it was a knockoff she'd bought in New York  ... of course I hadn't known the difference at the time. So that's how a fake Coach got me sucked into the lovely world of real Coach.

Oh my, what a fun job. I would love to work in a Coach store part-time. -I could just be paid in purses.

HA! It's funny that you say that. I was actually just thinking this morning that since I only worked about 7 hours a week for the last two years or so, I've pretty much been paying them to let me work there.... :p

I AGREE!!! Welcome Elsees_Enabler!!! I feel you- I live in No. Va. as well. There are so many Coach stores around our area....It's tough to resist!!! I'm sure your wife is going to be thrilled when she sees what you've bought her......

You and your wife are very fortunate to be around all those Coaches. We have no stores up here in the northern woods of California. A couple hour drive and yes, a Coach Store; a little further and an outlet. So, when I'm lucky enough to be in that area, I get to shop...other than that...eBay here I come.

Can't wait for your pics to be posted. We need to see all the metallics down the back of the door.:graucho:

Keep up the good work. If she gets tired of some, or some are feeling neglected, or she can't give them all the attention they are begging for... :D
