Great Scot has some interesting jacket designs to emulate with tweed if you have some lying around.Take a look- some designs are a cross between Victorian riding and modern. I don't like their buttons however. They would look great with a scarf done jabot style. I am learning to dressmake and found 10m of Borders tweed really cheap so have put it aside until my skills have improved then I am going to copy one of their suits. I did also cheat in the meantime and buy a Harris tweed cape to bide me over!
How wonderful to live in Edinburgh, Pautinka! Always wanted to go and got there a decade ago -- in August, best time to visit, lots going on.
I am unusual among the women I know b/c I have sewn for ages. I love the challenge of sewing plaids, to get the matching just right. Do they have fabric stores in Edinburgh that carry a lot of plaids because of Scotland's heritage? Here, woolen plaids and tweeds became harder to get in the 80's and afterwards as buildings became better at climate control. Plus woolen mills shut down like crazy: they couldn't compete with imported RTW. Now plaids rarely show up, even in quality RTW. (Pendleton is an exception). I haven't seen Harris tweed yardage or clothing available for the longest time. Now, I have to go to NYC fabric stores to get access to plaids and other woolens and that's a 3 hour train trip. Needless to say the climate's gotten a lot warmer and I find I get more wear out of corduroy than wool as a rule.
Harris tweed cape sounds wonderful. Pop a picture in here -- I'd love to see it. And of course pair an HS with it. I think a photo of a Harris tweed cape would be a "first" for tpf.
