THIS!!!! i totally agree!!! glad to hear you're getting a replacement, hope it's pristine!!!!! and same with me.. kinda worried about distressed ruthenium now but doesn't mean i don't want my boy, i am still gonna get one LOLLL.

Thanks for your reply:smile: Fortunately, I have a fantastic SA and I should have my new bag this week!! I have four other bags with RHW and absolutely no issues. I am hoping this was an aberration, but it is good to know that the metal is coated. I had no idea this was the case. I would definitely give a boy with RHW a try, as the SAs were as shocked as I was! If this was a common problem, they wouldn't have been shocked at all:smile: I would advise to start with one bag with RHW just to make sure it isn't a recurring issue. I am going to be more careful with RHW because I already have a few in my collection and I don't want to go overboard in case this does recur...

Wow! I just came across this thread and I am beyond shocked to know now that the RHW is coated. Never ever did I think that. I do know that my GST I bought 5 years ago give or take has peeling gold hardware on the grommets. Underneath is a light gold. I never took it into fix as I barely wear that bag anymore but at the time I was shocked and disgusted! Still am when I think about it. But to see this on a RHW boy, crazy! I assume that the brushed gold can peel then too? Ugh!

Yes, the gold can peel. Fortunately, I haven't experienced this yet with any of my ghw bags, but it has always been a concern of mine:)

Wow so sorry for the problem and glad that you're getting a new replacement for this gorgeous boy. I am surprised as well that Chanel uses a "coating" to make their ruthenium hardware.

I now find this all quite funny because when the 16C rainbow hardware came out, there was so much worry over whether or not the beautiful rainbow hardware would "peel off" as most people thought it was a coating. So back in Nov/Dec 15, I did a lot of rainbow into how the rainbow hardware effect was achieved (also often referred to as "oil slick/rainbow" effect), and confirmed that the way to make the hardware like that is by heating and treating steel a certain specific way.

what is ironic is that now I know the "unknown" / non-traditional Chanel hardware metal of rainbow hardware which so many people were so worried about durability thinking it was a coating was actually treated steel, while what we considered "traditional" hardware like brushed gold, black hardware, and definitely ruthenium (maybe silver, gold and antique gold tooo possibly?) - are coated metal instead of treated metal.

I-can't-even

What I can't understand is why they were done via coating? is it the only way to do it (e.g., this is the only way ruthenium metal is made/always accomplished via coating even non-Chanel)? or is it simply a cheaper way for Chanel to do it?

It came as a shock for me too. I always thought ruthenium look is achieved by the way the metal was treated, as opposed to applying a coating on another hardware.

But this is my first time seing the peeling of ruthenium. Hopefully its an isolated case (since the bag is practically new) and not all ruthenium harware is going to deteriorate into such.
