You think the Real Real is safer? They are full of fakes. I think that is worse because people are lulled into a false sense of security, thinking the site preauthenticates their items. They don't. If you get a fake and complain about it, they will give you a refund and then put it back up for sale. They never remove fakes from their site when they are informed.

I've bought stuff on Mercari and I sell there too. I don't think there are more fakes than authentic. I don't know what you've been looking at, but I'm only seeing a small percentage of fakes.
I'm loving all of the info here, I'm new to the purse forum and have been looking for information on how and where to buy an authentic pre loved chanel flap bag. I saw one on the real real and would like to buy it but I have now seen so many bad reviews of the real real I'm afraid to buy from them. Where do you recommend buying from?

I absolutely would implode you NOT write in the bag.

The most obvious reason is that it’s not your property and you aren’t the bag police.

But, another important reason is that authentications, particularly ones done from photos, can be wrong. This is why there is zero way to be COMPLETELY sure if a preloved bag is fake or real. And, I say this as someone who has happily purchased many preloved bags. It may seem like over kill but I send my preloved Chanels into Leather Surgeons to be cleaned and authenticated in person. I also get all my other preloved bags authenticated by two different sources. This makes me feel better about what I buy.

But, still, there is a chance that with your, my and other people’s authentication processes that someone is wrong. You risk defacing a perfectly good bag because your authentication process is in error.

In any case, if you return a damaged item, you shouldn’t get your money back.

I don't have any recommendations. There are authentic bags listed on all sites. The most important thing to do is to get whatever bag you are interested in authenticated before purchase by a reliable authenticator. Don't trust the inhouse authenticators some of these sites have. Don't buy from a seller that doesn't provide all the pictures necessary to authenticate.

I wouldn't have the heart to mark it, that's not nice, and no you wouldn't deserve a refund since now it's fake and damaged lol.
Some people may think it's a fake when it turns out it is real, no one is an expert 100% of the time. It would be a shame to ruin a real bag thinking it was fake.
And what if the person selling the bag got duped too and doesn't know? and they paid a lot for it, now you just ruined it with marker and they can't use it, now they are double screwed.

I buy and sell on Mercari but wouldn't attempt to purchase any bags. Most are fakes there so it's a waste of time. Try VC or the real real ( both are not without flaws obviously but are still a lil safer than Mercari for bigger purchases )
I sell stuff like chanel makeup that I don't like the colors and Tory Burch shoes but wouldn't try to buy a bag on there. There's more fakes than real often.
I wouldn't write replica in the bags. Just return them and move on. Make it a Lesson learned. Order from reputable sellers and always have all preloved bags authentication done like you did already.
If you write in the bags, they could say you destroyed them. ( I know they are destroyed already since they are fake and all but you know how people are)

Isn't the real real currently being sued by Chanel for selling counterfeit bags?

I'm not surprised. Anyone is at risk of getting a fake unless you buy from the designer itself. Bait and switch also happens at department stores.
I purchase a fair amount from TRR, do I suspect I got some fakes?...yep, but I try and stay clear from their bags because of their no return policy on handbags. Anything else at least you can return.

I just buy directly from the brand. For me, part of the joy of owning a special bag is the browsing then buying experience online or instore. My collection is relatively small and all Mulberry or Coach. Yes, of course I’d love to buy from the more exclusive brands too now I’m into collecting. However, I believe you get what you pay for and preloved is, for me, a minefield I’m not brave enough to wander into.

Once you're familiar with the brand enough you'll know what you're looking at. When models are discontinued (more and more with this musical chairs change of creative directors atm) the only option to buy is pre-loved or vintage. t's really not so much about bravery just knowledge.

OP. In my opinion.

There's not a little bit fake there's only authentic or fake (although there is also increasingly modified and non-authorised repairs) and I can see how it would make you really angry that a fake, deemed so by a source held reliable enough to get a refund (hence the seller's agency gets must believe it enough to void the sale and return the buyer's money) gets put back out for sale. But you do not have the authority to deface the bag, especially If the bag has to be returned in the same condition as it was sent to you (which is most likely). Unlike EBy, most of these concessions/agencies need the bag returned to consider all evidence (your claim) only after return does the bag become deemed a fake.

When an agency takes an item to sell or acts as a broker the contract usually states that the seller is responsible for the authenticity. This is how these businesses protect themselves from any fall out when an item is deemed not authentic. However, when an agency has been informed that an item is fake by a professional authority (which is why usually only a paid service for authentication counts legally) they cannot, at once claim ignorance of the status of the item and have granted a return of the buyer's money. By returning the buyer's money they have agreed with the buyer and paid-for service.

What is happening, as the OP has indicated, is that the agencies/concessions don't really care because they're covered. They just put it out again, 'set everything to zero' like Groundhog Day and will plead ignorance with the next buyer. The item should be returned to the seller explaining the situation and if the seller wants to also get a paid-for service to dispute that then it would be a case of professional authenticator V professional authenticator (most of these services will say if they can't determine).

So  you're right to be angry on behalf of the next buyer but you are not the right person to take any direct action against the seller.

Hi, sorry to hijack the thread but can I ask what happens when you return a bag on Mercari when it's fake? I bought a BV Olimpia and everything looked great, the tags, hardware, the seller even sent me a copy of the actual receipt. I received the bag today and took it to the local BV boutique and even they thought it was authentic until they ran the tag for me and couldn't find the number. They wouldn't officially authenticate the bag one way or another but they said that not finding the serial number in their system means that they wouldn't accept the bag for repairs which technically means the bag is not authentic. But even the SA was shocked at how well the bag was made as everything else said the bag was real.
Now I only have a few hours left to return the bag on Mercari. Do I choose the potential counterfeit option? I don't have an official letter from a third party authenticator so will they deny the return? I'm really stressed now.

I don't know but I would start the ball rolling. Choose potential counterfeit. I don't know if you have to prove it. Often that onus is on the seller, not the buyer.

Thank you! Can I find out if the seller gets into significant trouble? She is very new and very worried. She has a receipt from her friend and was shocked this was not real. I just feel bad for her.

You don't know it's counterfeit. You just know a BV boutique couldn't find the serial number. Even the boutique would not confirm it was a replica.
I would return, but not accuse the seller of selling a fake without written proof from a professional authenticator.

For the OP, absolutely not.
