I have gotten 3 bags thru Mercari that claimed authentic, but wasn't (got it authenticated online). The last bag that I got duped on was a chanel. After I got my refund & seller got her fake bag back, she turns around & relist the same exact bag claiming its authentic (now I know that seller is intentionally bring deceitful. It irked me & told mercari. Mercari took couple days b4 deleting that listing. I was thinking of writing "replica" in black permanent marker inside of the bag, if & when this happens again. This should make it a little harder to sell.

Well, if you did that, I hope you wouldn't be expecting to get your money back. I'm not sure why anyone would expect to be able to ruin a bag and then get their money back, whether the bag was real or fake. All the seller would have to do is claim that you did not return the bag in the same condition.

Maybe stop cheaping out by buying used goods instead of buying things and ruining them when they don't turn out the way you like.

Cheaping out on stuff... Who doesn't want a good deal or sale? BTW : the bag was $900, (half the price it would be if bought from a store), I hardly call that cheap

You have no ownership rights to a bag you return, including destroying it or defacing it.

If your big concern is avoiding fakes and safeguarding others from them, the world's easiest solution is in front of you. Buy only authentic goods from a brand's retail store. Three strikes with Mercari--you should be out.
Mercari wouldn't close my account. I have proof (video of unboxing) & had them authenticated professionally.
It's one thing to sell replica & be upfront about it. It's another thing to straight out lie & say it's authentic.

Right. But it’s done all the time. Fakes are all over the internet. 3 different times you ordered from same place with fakes? Lesson learned I suppose. Stop ordering from them. Sorry this happened to you. No I do not suggest you write on their property.

There is no problem with wanting a bargain or buying preowned. Sometimes the thing you want is no longer available in stores. Most of my collection was bought on sites like ebay and Mercari. What you need to do is get things authenticated before you purchase. If the listing doesn't have the pictures necessary for authentication, ask for them, and if the seller isn't cooperative, move on to another seller. In my experience, ebay is best about removing fakes among the resale sites I know about. There are more honest sellers than dishonest sellers on these sites. Don't condemn them all because of the bad ones.

It is not okay "to sell a replica and be upfront about it." Counterfeiting is illegal. If something has a brand name or logo on it, it had better be made by that brand, or it is against the law. You aren't allowed to sell counterfeits, even if you are honest about it.

I buy and sell on Mercari but wouldn't attempt to purchase any bags. Most are fakes there so it's a waste of time. Try VC or the real real ( both are not without flaws obviously but are still a lil safer than Mercari for bigger purchases )
I sell stuff like chanel makeup that I don't like the colors and Tory Burch shoes but wouldn't try to buy a bag on there. There's more fakes than real often.
I wouldn't write replica in the bags. Just return them and move on. Make it a Lesson learned. Order from reputable sellers and always have all preloved bags authentication done like you did already.
If you write in the bags, they could say you destroyed them. ( I know they are destroyed already since they are fake and all but you know how people are)

You think the Real Real is safer? They are full of fakes. I think that is worse because people are lulled into a false sense of security, thinking the site preauthenticates their items. They don't. If you get a fake and complain about it, they will give you a refund and then put it back up for sale. They never remove fakes from their site when they are informed.

I've bought stuff on Mercari and I sell there too. I don't think there are more fakes than authentic. I don't know what you've been looking at, but I'm only seeing a small percentage of fakes.

That's nice and all, but that still does not give someone the right to destroy a bag that they bought and then return it expecting a refund.

I've had great luck on the real real. I haven't had a problem with them but I know others have that's why I put the disclaimer in there. I always get my items authenticated before taking the tags off anyway but I haven't had an issue there yet. (Knock on wood )

I completely agree. I was responding to the OP's comment that it was okay to sell a fake as long you disclosed that it was fake. She seemed to think the crime was in the sellers lying about the authenticity of their items, not the selling of them.
