Ok gals, I have a lady needing help and I don't have an answer for her so I wanted to consult with you guys!! First off, do any of you have a makeupalley.com account? Under the red carpet manicure all the way at the end the reviewer Terri (she contacted me) is having issues saying her nails hurt, and are lifting, numb, tender!!!!! I know some on here have had allergic reactions to some gel polish systems!! Did any of you have the issues mentioned above??

Here's the link and her review at the bottom!! Please let's help her out!! She mentioned she developed allergy to acrylics and thinks the same may be happening here!

I agree it sounds like an allergy. It is interesting that she used Shellac first with no problems. If she really wants SOGS I would suggest she recover from the problems she has now, let her nails grow out, and then try Shellac just on one finger. For the few women that I have heard about who have allergies, all who try have found Shellac works for them.

That's what I recommended as well. My only concern is that if she had an allergic reaction to acrylics and now to RCM, the problem may not be with the photoinitiators (as it is often in the cases that we've seen here) but with another ingredient common to both.

It the same type of allergy. That's what the photoinitiators are - some type of acrylate. It just depends what type is used as to how it cures or "initiates": by air, by light, etc. So yes, she's probably allergic to MMA which is the curing property in acrylics and and other types of acrylates as well.

Yes Nancy, I was thinking the same!! I think she said opi gel was used on her at salon!!! So I wonder what the different ingredients are from opi to RCM! I told her to stop using it and call rcm and directed her to the beginner thread!! I honestly feel that if your nails are that thin that you should grow them out first prior to exposing them to any gel polishes!! Keep em short and use strengthening treatment and vitamins!!

On another note: someone on the RCM Facebook asked if its ok to shake RCM polish and the rep responded that its perfectly fine!! I always thought you shouldn't!! Hmmm....learning something everyday!!! I have always shaked my white hot cause its the one polish that always separates on me though and gets watery (I think its from using it less often than my other colors)

I don't think that's correct. Some photoinitiators aren't acrylates right, because Shellac and LE don't have any acrylates at all but do contain photoinitiators. I thought the acrylate in gel polishes was EMA. Isn't MMA the illegal one?

Yes, MMA is now illegal. But long ago used to be used in hard acrylics in the liquid part. I don't rememeber how long ago she said she used acrylics.

We were talking about RCM, and I still believe that the photoinitiator they use is some kind of acrylate. If we're including other products than RCM, yes, I should rephrase and say I believe that most initiators or activators are acrylates. It is simply the common term that stands in for whatever chemical is used in the reaction that cures the product. There are lots of them.

As far as Shellac goes, personally I don't think we know what they use. I've never seen an ingredient list. And it may well not be an acrylate, which may be why people don't react. But I've never seen proof that it's not simply a different type. All I've ever seen is "proprietary formula". It's commonly stated around that they "don't have any acrylates" but I've asked where that info comes from and never seen a concrete answer so I don't what I believe as far as Shellac is concerned.

She said she hasn't worn acrylics for 8 years now if that helps!
