An outlier suggestion, and I believe it’s also less expensive than OPs budget, but I liked a ferragamo shoulder bag that looked puffy and cute like a a YSL, but had black on black hardware like the LV mentioned above or the chanel so black. It does have a ferragamo bow, but that’s black on black too, and I think it’s urban sleek yet referencing classic ferragamo.

Thank you! I can’t pull off the puffy bag look but it looks like a good deal!

Sac de jour in Nano or baby size.
Love a good ysl purse in black with GHW. Do you own this bag and if so how’s your experience been?

Looking at your criteria, I’d suggest either a small Loewe puzzle in tan or caramel, a medium YSL college bag in black or brown, or a Louis Vuitton pochette metis in black empriente leather. The LV might be a little more logo- forward than you want, but I think I’m black it’s actually fairly subtle. All three of these bags are hands free and fit quite a lot.

Have you considered Loewe? They're very popular for the criteria you mentioned. There's a lot of subtly-branded, quality leather options from which to choose.
I have not, I’ll have a browse around their website.

Thank you for all the recs! I don’t love the two tone stitching of the puzzle for myself personally. I do like the college but perhaps too structured for day to day? I love the LV black empriente leather. We just had lunch and walked along the beach after and I talked to a lady who was carrying a LV black empriente Onthego- the sun on the leather was just gorgeous. But sadly after seeing it in person I think it might be just a tad too formal/logo-ey for my day to day and beach walks? Simply gorgeous though….

Edit - got ysl college and sac du jour confused. The college is one I was originally considering. I do prefer a zip top to a flap top though.

Pre-loved Evelyne? Or is that too logo-ie?
Thanks, the logo is nice and subtle.

I had the Sac De Jour Baby in smooth leather and sold it as I felt the smooth leather was too dressy. At the time I had just had kids and it just felt like too much. I went through several years of carrying no purse or just a teeny crossbody for my phone and keys and cards. I now miss the bag and am debating purchasing it again in either the nano or baby size but in grained leather. I love designer bags but don't like them to be too in the face either--I love the design of the pochette metis but the logos are just too much so I haven't bought one. The Sac De Jour was super comfortable and I think the grained leather (there is grained calfskin and grain du poudre) would be very durable. Personally, I like that it's an easy to get into bag--meaning no flap to undo-- and the top handle option I find makes it feel like a different bag if you want to take it out to dinners. I've grown very fond of bags with a crossbody and top handle as it makes them much more versatile--even better if it has an outer pouch, which again is why I love the pochette metis but find that the logo, while beautiful is off putting which is why I haven't taken the plunge. 95% sure I will repurchase the Sac De Jour. The stores have more variations of the bags than is shown online I believe. Like the souple version (less structured) of the bag with the visible studs last I checked my store had it in a colorway that was not online. Three negatives to the Sac De Jour are the accordion sides which sometimes I feel it makes the bag look odd, the lack of proper closure on top, and the fact that the resale value is not so great so it might be a bag to buy pre-loved. I was pretty bummed when I paid full price for it and sold it 1 or 2 years later in excellent condion for 1/3 of what a paid for it to a reseller.

Just realized I wrote a book on this :P,but your post has me interested because I'm also looking for the same thing.

Agree with all of this.

I strongly prefer grained leather atm, and a flap closure is a slight negative.

LV logo even in all black is slightly too much for me. I admire it on others though.

If I could find a good deal preloved, I for sure would take it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the sac du jour.

Any thoughts on the Gucci Soho Disco in black pebbled leather? I have been seeing some good photos of it worn out and I think it’d fit my personal style.
I’ve had a black Gucci soho disco for about 5 years and it’s my most-used bag. I am actually forcing myself to “rest” it right now because I don’t want it to wear out- I’ve heard it’s being discontinued but I don’t know if that’s true.

After 5 years of heavy use, mine has a tiny bit of corner wear that’s only visible really looking hard for it up close. I haven’t babied it at all. It’s my top choice when I travel because I can smush it into a larger tote and then I’m set for day and night.

It really seems very practical. It’s still sold on the Gucci website but in black only. We may be going to Italy later this year so it might be a good time to buy with the VAT discount… but I hope it is not discontinued before then.

I’m happy to hear that it’s worn well. I also like the lighter brown color but black would probably get more use.

For something durable, I would recommend something like the LV alma bb in epi leather. Epi leather wears very well and there is no big LV branding (especially if you skip the versions with the guitar straps). In fact, unless you know it's an LV bag it's difficult to see any branding especially on the darker colors. But, I also think the Loewe puzzle bag is a good option (although at it's current price I would look for a pre loved version). I love Celine but their bags I think are heavy, so if you go with a belt bag just know it will be on the heavier side. I also think the Givenchy Antigona in the mini size is good option and you can rarely go wrong with a LV speedy.

Thank you so much for the recommendations!

I’ve looked into these more now. Love the epi leather and look of Alma Bb but I’m a gold hardware/jewelry girl. Also prefer a bag that’s more flat when crossbody.

Loewe puzzle- not really my personal style atm although I appreciate the craftsmanship and the cool silhouette

Celine- ty for the feedback that they tend to make heavier bags. I still like the look of the belt bag

Givenchy Antigona mini- I like this in black. I’ve only seen silver hardware not gold though
