Hmm.
Haven't heard of some of these brands, actually.

Kate spade & mk attract my attention--lemons, pink bows & big, gold tags.
Tory burch annoys the bejeebers out of me, for no coherent reason. As do so many things in this world. :D
Coach seems sensible, functional. Clerks @ coach counters usually stop me--to ask about my mulberry bags.

But, per op's status ?, honestly none of named brands whisper to me, "I'm kind of a big deal." Not even lv.
Thought that was point of contemporary/youthful vibe? To buck convention?
My perception filter must be broken. Long-term. Possibly forever. ;)

I'm impressed by people without look@melook@melook@me-desperation going on in their personal style.
It takes inner pizazz. And courage to be oneself, even if that varies from norm.
Without being so outlandish as to cause alarm in public.

Hope answers helpfully. :)
Thank you for chiming in here my friend, I knew I could count on a great observation from you!
It smacks of desperation to me as well to always have to have all eyes on you for whatever reason, but it's particularly pathetic when it's someone carrying an LV (quite overly common btw) hoping that everyone will notice them and think they have a LOT of money and personal style.
Like you, I believe personal style is one that follows their own agenda rather that what the rest of the sheep are doing.
Guess it just takes a level of maturity and we (hopefully) all reach that level at some point in our lives.

I'd say that Alexander Mcqueen is the most interesting contemporary brand. As for the brands you listed, they are all of relatively equal quality and each have higher and lower quality products among their product lines. Albeit Michael Kors's runway line is probably the highest quality among them but is also priced above the rest.

I think trends differ country to country, local place to place, clique to clique.

In the UK, TB, Coach and MK have stores right next to LV and Hermes and people are just happy they can buy something nice for themselves in one of those 'posh' shops. I don't think there is an order, people don't really think like that here. If they do, obviously we can expect an H-crash soon since I wait for a bus from work to visit my mother carrying Hermes ;)

French themselves mostly want to carry contemporary designers like Gerard Darel and Longchamps sometimes even lesser known French or Italian brands (or non-brands too). TB, Coach and others familiar to you are not on the radar to most because it's not so much about the brand.

I think Longchamp makes very good quality leather bags that unfortunately get overlooked a lot of times due to their great & very practical le pliage counterpart.

On a shoe note: I just love the Tory Burch Reva flats! :)

I agree that we should all buy what we love than trying to be a carbon copy of somebody else. There are many people that buy LV bags, and we don't know why they chose it. They could happily love their bag, like me, and chose to buy it. LV could be their style which just happens to be popular.

Just logically speaking, items of similar monetary value and manufacture/design origins will imbue the owner with roughly the same "status" by definition.

I agree that none of the bags listed would particularly impress me on name alone if I saw them walking down the street. I'm more likely to appraise based on an entire ensemble right down to hair and makeup, personal style and how artfully each piece is chosen and worn together.

Whether or not she can afford a designer quality bag (like LV, Hermes, etc.) only tells me she was willing and able to pay for the item and that presumably she loves it. That she might wear a less expensive bag that I personally wouldn't choose is also of no relevance to me in terms of my opinion of status. I give a higher estimation of "value" to a well thought out personal flair design, rather than to the cost or reputation of the items worn.

That is, if I were to "judge"....

In these parts, the ranking would go something like this if we were to play along with the premise of the thread .... based on "status" alone:
Coach, MK, KS, E&J (but only among the younger set; for older ladies, E&J would be at the bottom) TB, RM

I live in the Rockies and we tend to get impressed by things we have heard of before, so that is more or less how the rankings would go. I imagine the truly initiated and knowledgeable would have a slightly a different list order.

And yeah, I think 3.1 and Dooney deserve to be on the list, possibly even Rag & Bone.
