The SA got back to me with 3 possible options. Could I get an opinion of these please?

Option 1
0.81 carats, G colour, VS1 clarity - $11,700
Triple X

  • Table size 55%
  • Depth 62.1%
  • Crown height 15.3%
  • Pavilion depth 43.4%
  • Culet - None

Option 2
0.84 carats, F colour, VVS1 clarity - $14,500
Triple X

  • Table size 59%
  • Depth 61.5%
  • Crown height 14.6%
  • Pavilion depth 43.5%
  • Culet - None

Option 3
0.87 carats, F colour, VS1 clarity - $13,600
(Note - this stone is not triple excellent)

  • Table size 56%
  • Depth 61.8%
  • Crown height 15.2%
  • Pavilion depth 43.2%
  • Culet - None

I've also planted the possibility of going online with my BF. So far James Allen and Brian Gavin seem to be the most highly recommended. Does anyone have an engagement ring from either (photos would be awesome). Thanks!

#1: Meh. Not worth the money.
EX/VG/VG/VG 1.5
It's a little deep for a stone with a 55 table, not worth the price.

#2: PASS.
Don't waste the time looking at this. You don't want a 59% table because you're going to lose fire. It might have white light, but it won't have much fire, which is the whole point! I didn't bother running numbers but I would guesstimate from those percentages you're easily in the at least 3.5-4.5 range on the HCA.

#3: The best of the three
EX/EX/EX/VG 1.5 as well
Still a little bit deep and may lose a little bit of spread for its carat weight but still going to be a solid performer. Without the whole lot of data on this, this is the best amount of info I can give you.

If you go with a US vendor, just keep the amount of VAT/Import etc taxes in your mind when you're planning your budget. That way we can help you find something in the budget that you set outside of taxes. Both would be fine, I will say that James Allen is having some SERIOUS growing pains right now, and has had some issues with double-sold stones, and settings that are not looking as good in person as on the site of late. Maybe a little ambitious with their growth/site revamp perhaps. Of the two I think I've found nicer stones on BGD than on JA, but pick the one that has a setting you prefer. BGD has a better Tiffany replica, if that is important to you that you have a setting similar to the real deal. Get it all from one vendor if you can since you're dealing with shipping.

If you want to give me an idea of your budget in USD I can give you a few stone ideas that will work (less the setting) and give you an idea of your budget. If you're willing to look at a G-H with Fluor you will get a lot more bang as well. Brian Gavin's blue line is pretty awesome for that.

WOW Ame, you're awesome! Thank you for reviewing those. I did run them through the HCA, but even though options 1 and 3 were below 2, I still had no idea how to differentiate them. And 2 was 4-5 from memory.

What do you think about this one - worth the money? http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-...rat-e-color-vvs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-112235

I'm just annoyed that we are willing to pay more for a B&M purchase (Tiffany or otherwise) but the quality of stone just isn't there.

I actually don't want a 1ct diamond, I prefer a 0.85-0.95 diamond with the best cut, higher colour and clarity. Would definitely consider a G with blue flor as well. We would get charged 10% GST on top of the price (no duty due to FTA between the US and Australia). I can't know my BF's exact budget, but I'll estimate and say up to $10-11K USD (diamond and platinum setting). I'd like a setting as close to the Tiffany one as possible.

Yea if the brand is letting you down it may be worth looking elsewhere. You can get a band from Tiffany to go with it. With the money you saved.

The one you linked from JA would be nice too! The images look lovely.

There's a couple Gs in there from bgd, but I don't know what sizes I got for those.

Just make sure whichever vendor you pick has a setting you like.

I'm not obsessed with the Tiffany brand, unfortunately they just happen to have the setting I like the most. Their workmanship is top notch too. So if I can find a setting that is close enough to the original, that would be fine. I guess the only issue I have with online vendors is not knowing the quality of the setting. I've had a look at Pricescope and haven't had much luck finding photos of the JA/BGD Tiffany repro solitaire settings.

I've bookmarked the JA diamond and might accidentally leave the screen open so my BF can see it :graucho:

I can't think of anyone that has the JA repro. Here or there. On here kathd has the brian gavin i linked, she upgraded with them instead of Tiffany a couple months ago. On there i can't think of names but I know it's recommended.

Ok here's the thread with Kaths upgrade:

For the JA stone link you posted--it looks fantastic. The ASET on the AGS report is quite nice--I think that weird green blob on the bottom right is simply the stone not being level in the device and nothing wrong with the stone. It's got an AGS Triple Zero Ideal rating, and I believe the IdealScope is posted beside the stone image there, and I believe it's THIS STONE's shots, and that is a hell of an IS image. That means more to me than the two VG's in the HCA listing below. GENERALLY running an HCA on a stone with the ASET and IS that nice is not really necessary. But if it matters, it's a 1.5 I believe. I didn't save it but it was below a 2. If you have a setting you like from them, this would be a fine selection.

Any of the BGDs I selected would also work for you if you have a setting from them you prefer.

Also--IF you get that James Allen---Ask the SA you work with to check with Jim Schultz to see if they're still a Vatche dealer, if they are, you want the Vatche U113.

If JA has the Vatche setting, that would be perfect. I'll send them an email and ask. BGD has more settings to choose from but not the diamond I want at this point in time.

My BF is actually fine with me telling him exactly what I want - I actually like doing the research (unlike him haha). I sent him the link to that H&A JA one ;)

I have a bunch of pics of the Vatche U113 that I took when I was looking if you'd like to see them.

Thank you - I'd love to see your photos if you wouldn't mind! Where did you purchase it from?

I didn't purchase it, I ended up with an estate setting. But if I hadn't stumbled across that one I would have purchased the Vatche. It's beautiful! I'll post the pics in a bit.

I have a lot...I was trying to get all angles. These were taken with a 2ct diamond sitting on top of the setting.
