by the way, do you know how much the import duty will be? trying to figure out if it's better (financially) to have bag picked up...

I would have to check my records, but I want to say it was somewhere between $500-600...this question has come up before I think. I remember there is some unbelievably detailed chart you can access online that will give you an idea (by % of the cost of the particular item).
thank youvery much. I don't need to know exactly...just ballpark. I have a friend in Paris who could pick it up and we could get it back to US without using FedEx. But I think I'd rather get it right away and not have to sneak around..

It looks like 8%. Bringing it through customs is always a bit nerve-wracking. If you do that, would declare it in full and hopefully they will wave you through. OR...ditch the box and carry the bag through like you've always had it. Much less stressful to just have them send it to you and as you say you'll have it more quickly.

you are right, better to avoid the stress. I don't feel up to smuggling through customs. And, I really want the box. I think I'll have DH pay for the bag, and I'll pay the duty. a birkin is so special, I don't want there to be anything shady about the way I got it. Plus, sounds like I'm saving $ by buying in Paris vs. NYC anyway (setting aside the availability issue). do you think I'll have the bag by Christmas?
