Buying diamonds online is very risky. People can create fake appraisals and switch out stones. If you want a vintage ring you might not have to upgrade the diamond. You could probably get a better diamond because it is pre loved. Going with a reputable seller is really important.

Based on what factual evidence? "Switched out stones" with a reputable vendor is not going to happen. The stone is going to match the accompanying report. And most reputable online diamond retailers don't include appraisals, just the grading report from a reputable third party lab, like GIA or AGS.
Would tiffany shorten a preowned piece? I'm looking an estate piece that supposedly has appraisal papers from Tiffany that are more than 10 years old.
What do you need shorten? If it is something like a DBTY bracelet, they will be able to do it.
It's the Victoria bracelet. I have small wrists and probably need it shortened by an inch.
If if is an antique ring? How do they know it is authentic? I don't believe they had laser inscriptions on the diamonds back in the day?
They still marked the setting. I wear an emerald and diamond ring from 1915 created by Tiffany, and they clean it all the time.
The Tiffany store where I go is really friendly. I have had a few items repaired or changed a bit. They will give you a free quote, then you can decide if you want to go forward.
When I get pieces cleaned or polished usually but not always I get a replacement pouch. Maybe take them in to be checked over and ask for storage bag.
