Pre-owned Rolex - please help

On watch forums it's causing some puzzlement. Nobody knows who's authenticating the goods, and I've seen posts stating that a purchase has turned out to date from the 1990s. You may not really know what you're getting. For something like a Rolex I think it's not very appealing, without more details and guarantees.
 
Most places that sell preowned, tune up the watch & sell with a warranty.
Wonder if they are buying Rolex's that are no longer being sold & other places won't buy second hand.
Be careful. Buyer beware.
