Pope Benedict XVI passed away today. I heard that “the pope died” and had to look it up. I was so relieved that it was not Francis, because though he has his faults historically; I find him to be a wonderful example of what we can aspire to in love and kindness. I don’t think many of the Catholics among us were very touched by Benedict. I’m sure he did his duty as best he could, and of course he was selected specifically with the idea that he would not have the role long after the death of the more beloved JPII (due to age, not imagining retirement).

Eternal Rest grant unto him and may perpetual light shine upon him.
Here is the same wish in solemn Latin, the language of the Vatican City and State:
Requiem aeternam dona ei et lux perpetua luceat ei.

And here in German, the language of Joseph Ratzinger aka Benedict XVI:
Ewige Ruhe gib ihm und das ewige Licht leuchte ihm.

Eternal Rest grant unto him and may perpetual light shine upon him.
Ewige Ruhe gib ihm und das ewige Licht leuchte ihm.

Comparing English and German it has just struck me that "him" becomes "ihm" - the same 3 letters, only in a different order. :)

And before Benedict was Pope John Paul II. Now that was a tough act to follow! And I think Benedict did it well. You can leave it to the NYT to slam Benedict in terms of the clergy sexual abuse scandals in addition to his adherence to hardcore Catholic doctrine . Fact is, it was Benedict that brought attention to those scandals, the first Pope to do so. It's a Pope's JOB to carry out Catholic doctrine, not revolutionize Catholicism to present day touchy-feely, "my truth" vs "other people's truths", or cater to individuals who act as though the world should revolve around them.

Besides the fact that he was part of the hitlerian youth, covered horrific abuse by the church and was responsable for financial scandal at the Vatican, Joseph was a lovely man.
I'm not defending Benedict, he doesn't need that. However, he was virtually a kid when he was forced to join the H*tler Youth and then the German antiaircraft corps, which he ended up deserting. It is my understanding that his family opposed the Naz*s.

That was NOT his fault!
Membership was COMPULSARY then.
Neither Joseph Ratzinger nor his parents or other members of the family were Nazis.
On the contrary.
They were harassed by the Nazis because they were NOT Nazi sympathizers.

It is extremely unfair to hold this against him.

He failed in other respects - but not in this one.

As I said: He did not join all these groups of his own free will.
It is extremely unfair to reproach him for being a compulsary member.

Benedict was considered the most intellectual and controversial pope. He left behind a letter asking for forgiveness from the ones he has wronged. "To all those whom I have wronged in any way, I heartily ask for forgiveness." It's a nice farewell letter imo. RIP
