Ohhh... I guess I'm going against the grain here...
I like the tote better... It looks more classic, and if you are considering it for a white bag, the style/color/silver hardware would look really crisp.
I like the Ali, but for some reason, I see it more in browns?? It seems like Ali in white would be kind of - clunky, but I haven't seen it IRL!!! So this is just from images on the net. Good luck!!!

Ali - I enjoy both black and white. I wipe them down with a soft baby (velour) hand towel and Appleguard moisturizer (cleans and protects) use at your discretion! Ali is about the size of a medium tote, holds a lot. I just saw a C shoulder tote today, it's a nice large shape. Ali is a flap with glorious legacy stripe!, Tote is open, easy to get in/out. I'm carrying my ergo tote right now (glorious legacy stripe!)
Definitely the Ali. There's something special about the Legacy leather. It's such a nice bag and as others have said, the lining is tdf. Good luck in making your decision. It's gonna be a tough one.
Get the Ali. I own two of them, one in whiskey and one in White. I love them both so much.
You will not regret buying this bag. It is one of the best bags Coach has ever made.
ALI!!!!! I agree with Liz! I think it is the best bag Coach has ever crafted! I have it in black and I wouldn't mind getting the white . . .
I like both, but the Shoulder Tote edges it out just by a hair. I love, LOVE pebbled leather and if you tie a scarf on it you are good to go! I was just never into the Ali as much as the other Legacy bags.
The Ali does have the wider strap too, which helps balances out the weight of all your stuff, it also has a flap clousure, while the Shoulder Tote just has the dog leash closure. Just some other things to think about. Have you tried either of these bags on?
