Plastic protector on hardware

Orange shields on lindy hardware. I love the shields as it did not cover the nails which is the caused of tanish and discoloration. The hardware shone brightly and it's fingerprint resistant. Without the shields, fingerprints are v obvious and ugly in my opinion. I bought OS for my other Hermes bags as well. So far I really like the appearance. Not obvious, shiny and transparent, and fingerprints free.

Bumping this old thread with new info.

My friend and I had a lovely chat with the new-ish craftsman in residence at the NYC boutique this week.

Noticing that I still had the plastic on my BGHW, I started to peel it off - and he stopped me! He suggested that I should absolutely keep it on for protection (and asked my friend if she would like him to put some plastic on her GHW). He added that especially BGHW will show scratches badly.

In addition (and off topic, but I don’t even know where to post this), he informed me that matte gator can absolutely get wet (to my friend’s delight since I have been a bit crazy making sure she keeps her matte gator B35 dry ever since she got it).

This is so confusing, some H staff craftsmen say to remove the plastic and some say to leave it on. In the end I think it's a personal choice. A friend recently purchased a bag on the secondary market and was very grateful that the previous owner left the plastic on, as the hardware was pristine even though the bag was a few years old.

I just received mine for my Kelly but I am very hesitant to pull off the original protectors. Are yours still staying on well? Or have you had any issues with them?

Frankly I don’t understand people who leave the plastic on the hardware. Especially the visible hardware, because imo it takes away a lot of the beauty of the bag, shiny hardware in particular.

In addition it always makes me think that these people are not keeping the bags but reselling them and yes, they have the freedom of choice, it’s just not my cup of tea.

I think this issue has been debated for years. I take mine off, but a glance through TPF will reveal that many women are OCD (IMHO) about their bags, examining them for the smallest defect, and keeping them perfect. I don't think it's necessarily for resale, it just seems to be conduct prevalent here. To each his or her own.

No other ways
Remove otherwise it will oxidize
Just enjoy your collection in due time send in for replacement due to wear and tear

Yes i now think thats the best way after watching video and reading reviews in here.i just asked my SA and he also said the same thing as we lived in humid and hot weather here in malaysia :-s

I was told yesterday by yet another craftsman to take the plastic off immediately. Funnily enough this craftsman has been quoted as saying the opposite. So H is also of two minds on this!

Hi friends!

Since I came across this thread, I decided to take off the stickers on my bags. This is unfortunately the damage that was left on my rose gold hardware. I live in a humid environment so the theory about weather causing the quick oxidation may be possible.

I’ve been hearing a few things I can do to fix this:
1. Use an eraser
2. Use a polish cloth
3. Get the hardware replaced

Does anybody have any positives or negatives about any of these options before I try? Thank you for your help! Lesson learned - taking off stickers the second I get my bags. Trying to do some steady breathing exercises to avoid going into panic mode:crybaby:

@GlitterEyebags I am so sorry for you! This thread is making me think of bag storage. My friend who lives in NYC has a small closet close to her master bath. I wonder if humidity from the bathroom could tarnish the hardware with or without the plastic. I live in a dry environment and store my bags in a dry location but this makes me wonder if humidity could be a huge factor. I’ve heard both, remove the plastic/don’t remove the plastic. I have my plastic on with no issues and I’m ocd about scratches/fingerprints.

If I am judging your photos correctly, the tarnishing occurs at areas without the plastic covering so they are slightly darker is that right? I am not sure if this will be any help but this is from my own experience. I have a kelly clutch that started to have tarnishing on the hardware. There was no plastic protector on the hardware but it started to tarnish too. I circled the tarnish area in red here.

I purchased a jewelry polish cloth from Amazon and started to try my luck at polishing it. It worked wonderfully for my case as you can see here. This photo was taken right after I polished the hardware.

I recently have also encountered similar tarnishing issue on my 2009 Chanel flap with silver hardware. I noticed the silver hardware had turned to almost like ruthenium and then I tried the polishing cloth that I had again and the polishing cloth managed to clean up all the tarnishing for the Chanel hardware as well. It is like light and day after polishing.

For reference, this is the type of polishing cloth that I have used. I hope you may find this helpful and please update us if you manage to do anything to fix it.
