Plastic protector on hardware

For anyone considering these Orange Shields, I would encourage you to ask the company what their guarantee policy is or how they can back up the claim that they prevent tarnish when we have tons of posts from people who have had issues from leaving their hardware covered. It's a fairly new product that seems to have cropped up on IG (or perhaps is made by a member looking to cash in on cautious behavior?) They don't exactly provide a ton of information online and they're rather overpriced for tiny pieces of die cut plastic. I would ask for more information before sticking anything on my 10K bags and I'm one of the less careful members here :amuse:

Screen protectors exist to protect the different types of glass on phones but I believe Apple does not encourage use of protectors on their screens due to damage to the oleophobic treatment their screens receive during manufacturing. Pretty sure Hermes wouldn't encourage anyone to apply an aftermarket sticker to their hardware and you run the risk of them declining future service if something did get tarnished under the "shield" that you put on. Just something to think about...

I absolutely agree with you. Putting something that is a relatively new product on an expensive bag is scary . While I don't baby my handbags I do take care of them. The thought of buying something to protect them and then finding out that in the long run they did the opposite would put me over the edge. Bags cannot stay new forever - they will take on a life experience of their own. I think this is good.

Yes, leaving the plastic on can cause issues. Sometimes it depends on the climate, sometimes it seems to happen if they are left on for too long.

I recently acquired an H bag from a reseller (first time I have done this) and the plastic was still on the strap hardware. It was a 5-year-old bag, in great shape, but the strap hardware seemed a bit darker than on my other bags (which are newer and had their plastic removed as soon as I bought them). I am guessing that the plastic had an effect on the gold plating.

I heard from Hermes SA that the plastic should not be left on the hardware as it can cause it to change color.

'fraid so .

Leaving the plastic film or putting on new plastic film will lead to oxidation and corrosion. It may sell for more money at resale but I wouldn't want to be the buyer.

No one should be storing their bags in their boxes full-time either.

Such an interesting thread. Whatever works for people is what they should do. It's enlightening to read everyones take on this. I think I fit into the category A folks, who love the quality and want to use the bag as intended. I'm not crazy about protecting from scratches or rain but my b is barenia, so it begs to be used in a casual way. I wouldnt ever let the plastic stay on. Here's an alternative to beat up or tarnished hardware. Credit for the custom sterling hardware goes to our own DocRide. A little silver polish-cloth and good to go.20170501_154507.jpeg

I took my plastic protection off my hardwear due to it pull up on the corners and in the middle so it looked bad. My bag is a 03 so I don't know if it's been on since it was new as I purchased it preowned and it had the plastic on it when I received it. So after I took it off the hardware was perfect no oxidizing or marks on it from having the plastic on so I then put on a orange shields protector it and it looks great. Both pics have no filter just different lighting its nice shiny and clean. IMG_1496882730.280046.jpg

I agree with you. To me leaving the plastic on is like leaving the tag on a dress right at the front lol. What's the use of getting an H bag for $10k .... a tarnished hardware could be replaced under $500 by sending the bag to the spa. I like to use my materialistic things. . Life is too short. I don't even know if I would even make it home today.... I could get run over by a truck, car accident lol

I just got a new B and removed the plastic as soon as I got home. I love the shine of the hardware. On my first outing with the bag I noticed a big smudge on the strap hardware. I realized I didnt remove all of the plastic from one area and it was hitting the strap. Fortunately it didnt scratch. But I could see that as another downside to leaving plastic on - over time it will come off and could be abrasive.

I agree with you also!
Unfortunately, the plastic is still on my 6 week old new B bought at the boutique. I want to get the confidence to take it off. I really do not think it does any good nor look appealing on the bag.

Sending you positive thoughts! You have the black B30 right? The hardware will look AMAZING against the black! I have been carrying my black B a lot and I have had zero problems with the hardware. It was even near a landscaper guy blowing debris and remained unscathed!

Taking the plastic off is the best part! Same thing with new phones, etc lol
I do like keeping my hardware ‘shiny’, so when I clean my sunglasses, I sometimes do a quick wipe over a smudge. Last time I did though, there was something on the microfiber cloth and I scratched the strap’s clasp of my day old, fresh out of the mothership black Epson, pristine gold hardware K25
My heart dropped for a New York minute, then I got over it. Too many beautiful things to see in Paris. Although I do ‘baby’ my bags, I bought them to enjoy them, so plastic off all they way, baby!!
(And no protection under Loubies, either! They go commando as well. )

I couldn't agree more!
