its allowed personally i would not carry that much cash unless i was driven dirctly to the shop and still i dont love the idea plus if you pay with a card you get the miles ????

Makes no difference if buying from a boutique. All the refund policies are the same regardless. If buying from reseller I would always go PayPal route as you get protection if there is a problem.

That said if the store has strict policies regarding the number of bags to be bought, cash makes sence as you can use another name. That way, next time you can pay card with your real name. This wasn't my suggestion but my SA's. Shouldn't be like this but it is.

Oh that is interesting. However at Rue de Sevres they took your passport before they would show you bags, so I assume they'd still have you on file if you paid cash? It was a little disconcerting to give up my passport for the hope of a clutch!

If you were de-taxing in France and when you are reclaiming your detaxe at the airport, you will have to make another miserable queue at the 2nd counter to get your money back in cash if you purchased the item in cash. That will make you queue at 2 different very often a heck of a long queue and might you miss your boarding time or must decide to forget about the refund.

I have to agree about the buying of expensive items in the UK too, even the banks get twitchy about paying in large amounts of cash - who'd have thought that ?
I would ring ahead and ask their policy or you could get quite a shock when you're trying to pay.

Remember reading somewhere on tPF that in France they'd take only up to 2000 euros is cash. If you carry more cash travelling, was it over 10 000 euros, you need to declare it at the customs even if otherwise nobody would check your passport, so yes, money laundering is taken seriously.

In Sweden you have to be able to account for any larger deposit you make into your bank account. I have paid parts of my purchases with larger amounts of cash. Not more than 2k if I remember correctly.

i'd worry first about carrying around so much in cash. secondly in some countries there is a limit of how much cash can be accepted at stores due to money laundering concerns. Safer to pay with card, I agree.
