Paying for handbags

I feel a lot less guilt when I use cash (I just feel the credit/check card drainage more) so I try to avoid using it whenever possible, it just vanishes into vending machines and stuff. I have a pretty even split between my using my bank card and my Visa. I carry a balance sometimes but it's never very high (I try to keep under $200 on my card at all times, and my interest rate is low) and I always make a valiant effort to pay it every month, I usually manage to do it.

I always make purchases with either cash or a debit card. My philosophy is that if you don't have the cash readily available, then you can't afford it!!!!! Smart thinking goes a long way. I'm amazed at how many super young girls have all of these $1000+ bags!!!! What in the world? I am 32 years old, married to a surgeon, and only of the last two years or so have found it reasonable to spend that kind of money on a bag. How do college girls do it....I'm just curious. I'm sure some people have wealthy parents that buy them for them, but what about all of the others? Interesting subject to discuss!

I hate carrying around cash (had my wallet stolen once) so I Amex it and then Hubby takes care of the rest.
I always double check with him when I'm going to make a big purchase since he handles all the budgeting stuff. That way I don't feel guilty about spending a ton on something.
We stopped using credit cards a few years ago and ever since then everything is so much more enjoyable...I like actually owning what I have. You know?

I don't know if I'm a "super young girl" but I'm young! I have a set amount of money every month and I manage it however I see fit. I agree with you, Missjas, I figure if I can't pay for it in cash, I shouldn't buy it. However, if I have a card with 0% APR (which is rare, I only recently got one!) I don't mind splitting up a big payment into two months. I've never gotten myself in debt and I don't ever plan to.

I got the MJ Ursula Elise bag and it cost a little over a thousand. My parents didn't help me pay for it though. I've just been saving money for the past few years and it's gotten to the point where I've saved enough that I can afford an expensive handbag maybe once a year. :D

i'm 20 and buy expensive bags. my parents have never bought me a bag, but because i got a merit scholarship for my college tuition and they are very responsible with their money (and therefore not strapped for cash), they pay my car payments, gas, insurance, rent, etc. everything associated with school. i work my ass off part time (i sell appliances) to have money to spend for myself, and i figure i might as well have fun and buy ridiculous things now while i don't have any financial responsibilities. in a couple years, it's off to the real world to build a life and career, and i won't be able to do stuff like this again until i get all that together, so why waste the freedom i have now?

I'm impressed at how everyone that uses credit cards pays them off in full at the end of the month. That's definitely the way to do it if you use credit cards!!!! Smart ladies out there!!!!! :D

I just wanted to chime in; awesome about the merit scholarship! I think you deserve a bag or two!! Is it for all 4 years? I worked like a crazy person in school to get a scholarship so I know just how hard and competitive it really is.

I totally agree with you. Can't say I've always been that smart, got in a little over my head in college. But now we always pay off those balances at the end of the month.

Giving credit where it's due, my hubby is the one who keeps us in line. He works in the financial world and would have it no other way. You all should feel proud of yourselves for being so disciplined with your money - not always easy with so many beautiful but expensive handbags tempting us constantly:idea:

thanks hun :-) mine probably wasn't as hard-fought as yours, Georgia has a program called the Hope Scholarship and anybody that graduates from a GA high school with a B average or better gets their tuition paid to any public state university that will accept them. Students that choose private in-state schools get an amount equivalent to public in-state tuition. it's pretty cool, it's paid for by the lottery. because of it, The University of Georgia (my school) has gotten a LOT harder to get in to than in the past because more top students stay in-state. for example, i had a friend with a 1600 on his SAT that got in to MIT and Duke that now attends GA Tech because of it :-D. it's crazy!

i use my visa the very first credit card i got when i was 18 and plus it has the highest limit, i usually pay what i can on the card but now i'm trying to decide on a dior boston, chanel reporter, gucci wallet...omg i won't have money for a condo
