Paris question.. please help!

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

At FSH they give you the option of charging your cc via US D rather than euro - that way a conversion fee isn't applied by your cc company

This is a great idea! I wonder if they'd do likewise for other currencies...

Please check with your credit card company on charges, from what I understand that being charged in US$ at the retailers rate is not as good as to allow your credit card company to do the conversion for you. The advice on the web recommeds that you be charged in the local currency. For example, when I was in Fort Lauderdale, my Amex rate (then ) was $1.37 to the Sterling but the Hilton rate was $1.21.

Sounds like there are quite a few of us planning on trips to Paris FSH the mothership! I have a question regarding their late August "holiday", if there is any. Basically, I'd like to know if they are on holiday for the entire month of August. If so, then do they open right on 9/1? Thanks in advance for helping me out.

The factory shuts in August, therefore by September it is unlikely for them to have any Birkins. Their stock would not replenished again till mid September onwards based on the information I got last year.

One member been to FSH all week this week and no Birkins! Personally I think the Birkins are all being shipped to America as it appears to be most profitable there for Hermes (maybe its the import tax pushing price up?).

If you are after non-Birkins then fine...

I was just there last Thursday through Monday and saw three 30, 35 Birkins. I saw a Raisin 35 (the only 35 there) in Togo w/PH, a Gold 30 in Ostrich w/GH, and a 30 Croc Birkin, can't remember which red. They had Birkins and HACs in 40s the three (Thur, Fri, Sat.) days that I was there. I was lucky enough to get a 36 HAC in Boxcalf with GH!!! I still need to do my reveals from my trip. Here's a preview though!

Good luck to all of you! The ostrich B that I saw was a George V and not at FSH. Go in the morning when it opens. You'll have the best luck then. I forgot to mention that I met a tPFer there!!!!!

You pay full price first, and get refunded only when your detaxe forms are processed. This might be at the airport in cash (in which case you typically receive only around 5% in return because of various commissions), or a few months later after you mail your forms back to Hermes (in which case you get about 9% in return in your own currency after taking into account currency exchange rates and commission from your credit card company).

Unless you are on transit only in Amsterdam on your way out from Paris, and have an onward boarding pass for your flight outside the EU, you will not be able to get your detaxe forms stamped at Paris airports, but you would need to stamp them when you leave the EU from Amsterdam instead. You are usually asked to show your boarding pass / passport together with the detaxe forms, so they can ascertain you are not a EU citizen, and you are leaving the EU. So unless you are just on transit in Amsterdam, you would not have a boarding pass that shows you are leaving the EU.

Hermes France does its own refunds, and it is easiest through a credit card. In fact, my FSH SA automatically selects this option for me. In this case, it would not make any difference from which airport you leave the EU.

thanks so much for your advice! we are flying into amsterdam then going to paris on a train for a few days then coming back to amsterdam and flying out of there..

i just want to make sure i completely understand what you had said..

i am definitely planning on making my purchase in paris at FSH..

so they will automatically do my refund right there on the spot and i won't have to worry about any tax/custom forms at the airport?

Do you know about how much of a discount you get by having hermes do the discount?

Thanks so much, i really appreciate everyones help!

The is my first trip out of the US and i am clueless at what i am suppose to do!

You always have to take your detaxe forms to the detaxe booth when you are leaving the country.

Detaxe 101:

Have your passport with you when you go to Hermes to shop (or anywhere, for that matter, where you will qualify for the detaxe). You need this.

Hermes will prepare the detaxe forms for you, but you still need to process them yourself when you fly home. Before you check in and turn over your checked bags (if any purchase is in the bags you will check) head to the detaxe booth. Show your tickets and passport and detaxe papers. There is a good chance the detaxe agent will ask to see the items. This is why you do not check your bags first! The more expensive the item, the more likely they will insist on seeing it. If you cannot produce it, your papers will not be processed.

The agent will stamp your forms and keep one copy. You keep one and send the third back to Hermes in the envelope that is provided with the forms. You don't need a stamp. The agent will direct you to a mailbox for these forms.

I always use the method that gets the biggest return. This means I just tell Hermes which charge card to apply the detaxe to. When Hermes receives the stamped form that you put in the mail at the airport, they credit the charge card. This gets you 10%, minus any slight fee from your credit card company.

If you are flying home from any country other than France, ask about the procedure and make sure you can do what you need to do at the airport of your departure country.

Hope this helps a little.

If you buy from Hermes in France, Hermes will do the forms for you, but you will not get your refund straight away. You need to get the forms stamped by customs at the last port of departure in the EU (in your case, this is Amsterdam), post the forms back to the address in France (use the envelope given, but you need to put your own stamps unless posted in France). 8-12 weeks later, assuming that Hermes receives the forms, you will get a 10% refund (minus about 1% in currency exchange) on your credit card.

When you fly out of Paris, are you on transit in Amsterdam before flying back to the US? And will you be using the same airline all the way from Paris back to the US, or are you changing carriers? This affects the boarding passes you may or may not hold flying out of Paris. Unless you have boarding passes that show you are leaving the EU from Amsterdam while you are at Paris airport, you cannot get French customs to stamp your forms at Paris airport, but will have to wait until Amsterdam airport to do so.
