Paranoid about being robbed!

I'll be traveling to Ireland in September and was a little worried when I saw your post! I was thinking of bringing a large nylon tote for the plane (Longchamp or Knomo), with a smaller bag inside for traveling around everyday (maybe Burberry - though not with the ubiquitous check, or perhaps a Balenciaga Town or First). We'll be in Dublin for a few days, and then we'll be driving around the country for a couple of weeks.

Do you think it's absolutely essential to have a crossbody option since these are generally considered safer from theft? If I bring a large nylon tote it won't have a crossbody strap, but that might influence my decision as far as what to bring for my smaller, everyday going-out bag....

I'm looking forward to my trip very much but am curious to hear about theft in Ireland, especially Dublin. Thanks for the timely thread!

I would bring a crossbody for traveling anyway, it's much more convenient! i live in ireland (not dublin) and do not worry about crime here (i'm american so maybe that is why ireland doesn't seem threatening). I always feel very secure :smile1:

Thanks so much for your comment! I guess I'll just do my best do be aware, especially when in Dublin. Maybe if I do end up bringing a Bal City for my every-day going out bag, I'll pirate a crossbody strap from another bag to make crossbody an option... :)

I also live in a place with a high crime rate. I think it is actually a good thing to be always alert and on your guard and keep your belongings safe in ALL situations (even if that entails a certain level of paranoia). however, if somebody held me up at gun or knife point for my bag, I don't care if my stuff or bag costs a million bucks... I'd give it right away. no material thing is worth my life.

I knew someone who was held up at gunpoint for a cellphone, she did not give it up and she was shot at the face. she had to endure a long journey of reconstructive surgery and healing but thankfully, she lived.

Looks like you live in Dublin. If you're spending a lot of time commuting and/or walking around, I'd definitely stick with under-the-radar bags. I spent 3 months in Ireland, so I have an idea of how things are in the cities, and I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable carrying a recognizable designer bag around in Dublin. You know the cities better than I do, so I'd just say use your judgment. If you find yourself hesitant to carry a bag, don't carry it.

I think you should always consider the parts of town you're going to have to pass through to get to your destination when you decide what kind of bag to carry. There are certain areas of my city where I would never go with a designer handbag, expensive watch, or nice jewelry. Again, just use your best judgment, and I'm sure you'll be fine. Unfortunately, there are times when we should leave our nice things behind for our own protection.

I have actually been robbed and it is NOT fun. Where I work is getting scary, rolling gun battles (drug related and gang related) and random robberies, "knockout game" where teenagers running around in groups randomly walk up to people and just beat the ever loving crap out of them for no reason at all, etc. I have decided to downsize my beloved bag to a smaller crossbody (my current does have a crossbody option) to try to offset that a little. It's getting crazy down here.
