Paranoid about being robbed!

I am visiting Ireland in June, should I not carry my LV Crossbody? Used it all through Italy with no problems but now that you posted, I am worried![emoji162]

Dublin is like any capital city, theft is absolutely rife but the rural parts of Ireland are generally fine. As countries go, Ireland is probably very low on the crime stats, I was just curious to hear what international folks thought!

I hope you enjoy your trip, do being an umbrella though, our weather is unpredictable!

I am excited to visit, taking a 10 day tour. I will definitely bring an umbrella and raincoat!!!☔️

From the people who have been actually robbed it doesn't sound like the robbers were very educated about expensive handbags. It sounds like most robbers are interested in the money in your wallet (since you can quickly cancel your credit cards).

So while I wouldn't flaunt a super expensive bag, I also tend not to walk alone or even at all, down dark streets in the night. I think if you take common sense precautions that protect your own personal safety that it will protect your bags as well.

I agree--these robbery scenarios indicate a desire for money, not so much bag.
My wishes for healing go to those recovering from crime trauma.

Suggest a few things:
1) insure bag & keep records with serial # etc.--if necessary, let it go without fear
2) carry decoy wallet in your pocket, with only some cash inside--show robber this decoy cash , then throw it down & run away
3) use cheap tote to conceal bag, when in questionable areas--or just leave it @ home

I don't feel paranoid about carrying my bags. I've traveled & walked alone, no problems.
I strongly believe that awareness & common sense are valuable defenses. I use these, best I can & foremost.

Safe journeys to you. :)

I live in Ireland (hint is in the username) and crime has been on the serious up in recent years. I've heard of women being held at syringe-point and their bags ripped from their shoulders! I am so paranoid about my bag being stolen.

Does anyone else feel this way?! And secondly, have you ever had a designer bag stolen from you? Obviously as long as nobody is hurt that's the main thing but it would still be devastating to lose your bag!

Nope, but then again the average age in my town is probably 65…nothing to be really scared about. As for a bag being stolen, it can always be replaced.

I have not been robbed on the street however i have been robbed at work.

I was filling in at another location of where i work because they were short on staff. They have 2 entrances to the back room, one has a proper door and one has a galley door that swings both ways with no lock. The layout of the store is kind of complicated they went into a part of the store that is not highly visible from the front and of course that was also right by the swing door. Long story short the guy entered through the swing door and had taken my bag into the bathroom and dumped out the contents of my purse in the sink and then left with my wallet and cellphone.

It took a long time to get my cards and phone replaced because i had no valid ID anymore as my passport had recently expired and in order to get my new phone(i had insurance thankfully) they needed valid ID and in order to get my ID i needed other ID so it was a bit of a run around getting everything but i got it eventually. Plus my work never reimbursed me even though it was partially their fault for not having a lock on the door. Although 6 months later the police found my wallet with my cards and stuff and everything in it except for my phone. The wallet was trashed though... it looked like a dog had gotten to it and then dragged through mud.

Now i'm going to the UK(London and other parts of England) at the end of May and am a little paranoid as i heard pick pocketing is rampant over there. That's partially why i want to buy a new bag before i go because the only one that i could see myself bringing just has a single snap closure so people could still potentially stick their hands down either side. Was also planning on just bringing cash but have decided to put it on a prepaid travel card in case anything happens.

Someone stole my LV wallet from the bag I had put on the floor while trying on a jacket and looking at myself in the mirror outside a dressing room!
Lesson learned! Be careful ladies wherever you are.
The boutique where it happened was a high end one.

I'll be traveling to Ireland in September and was a little worried when I saw your post! I was thinking of bringing a large nylon tote for the plane (Longchamp or Knomo), with a smaller bag inside for traveling around everyday (maybe Burberry - though not with the ubiquitous check, or perhaps a Balenciaga Town or First). We'll be in Dublin for a few days, and then we'll be driving around the country for a couple of weeks.

Do you think it's absolutely essential to have a crossbody option since these are generally considered safer from theft? If I bring a large nylon tote it won't have a crossbody strap, but that might influence my decision as far as what to bring for my smaller, everyday going-out bag....

I'm looking forward to my trip very much but am curious to hear about theft in Ireland, especially Dublin. Thanks for the timely thread!

I am very sorry to hear that.

You are aware, and that is the best protection as most thieves that target women look for opportunities. Most thieves are low-life opportunists not clever criminals. Of course (as demonstrated by some of the above stories) pros (including teams) know what they're doing, they are not clever but they are organised and practiced.

Despite the initial outlay, most bags are not worth very much on the second hand market but they attract pro thieves to you, as they think someone is bound to have more money/things worth taking if they can afford designer. Thieves also often know certain concession stores that don't mind paying up-front and 'no question asked'.

Contarary to belief most thieves do not directly confront/rob victims. As someone who often had to offer pastural care to students who had been the victims of crime (in inner London). Most had their bags snatched from popular cafes, wine bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants. Clubs are rife with pro-cons watching women and men (wallets in back pockets) get a little tipsy and 'bump' into them on the dance floor whilst teams operate in larger eating/drinking establishments and look for bags hooked over the back of chairs, on long shared sofas or under tables (using their feet to draw it over to their adjacent table). The reason for this 'passive' theft is it avoids confrontation and can be done throughout the city repeatedly all day if need be, and it's treated as a lesser crime by the police.

I leave my Brandname bags at home. Always with the no name and unrecognizable cross body with a zipper and compartments when I'm on a trip. Unless it's a business trip, I don't know what I can expect so, I'd rather be on the safe side. I lost my wallet sometime and it's no way fun. And that's in my hometown where I can get things replaced. I don't want to have that problem oversea. The smaller the bag, the better to get it concealed or harder for the criminal to reach. And I also switch out to the non-flashy wallet since I may want to buy something from a vender and I don't want to attract anybody. I know I sound paranoid, but I never have a problem during my trip and I always have a good time.

Longchamp sounds perfect. Even cross bodies can be targeted so no bag is entirely safe unless it's padlocked [emoji1] As countries go, there are good and bad areas. I suspect if you're coming here on a holiday you'll avoid the bad areas quite easily.

Enjoy your trip! [emoji8]

I totally agree with you ;)

If I go on vacation I never take my designer bag. I am just afraid that I get robbed or I could lose something.

I always use my Tumi bag for vacation or mission. But since I got my Kipling bag (just love it sooo much, it is very convenient for travelling, not heavy and you have many compartments) I use my Tumi bag for missions and Kipling bag for Vacation :D

I get paranoid if I lose something.

I like Kipling for traveling, too! :) My favorite cross body is from Husky though. But it has the same nature as Kipling ones. It's light and not flashy at all. Plus, I'm not afraid about getting it dirty or ruin during the trip. I just wash it afterward. And it look the same after many years. (My Kipling faded a lot after some years, but maybe coz I don't really pamper them at all.)

I also live in ireland (not dublin though) but I have never been worried about crime here...I'm surprised to read your thread!!

I lived in DC and boston so maybe that is why I'm just not worried about it here?

I'll def keep my eyes more open. I'm not surprised it's syringes and not knives though, what a horrible tactic.
