Not quite overhead but more told to me by my SA:
A few minutes into my appointment, another SA comes up to mine and indicates that a previous client wanted to see if they could leave their purchase at the front while they shopped around. But it was an empty box in a shopping bag, as the client had decided to wear his newly-purchased shoes out of the store.

After a good 20+ min later, she returns looking a bit exasperated. She apologized again for how long it took. Turns out the client then decided that he wanted to return the shoes that he already wore outside, saying they were uncomfortable. (My home store isn't located within an indoor shopping locale, rather along a street with heavy foot traffic and the shopping in the area is mainly outside on pavement. So those shoes would've clearly been worn.) The client was upset that the store wouldn't allow a return (didn't seem familiar with their policies) nor accept an exchange/credit option (clearly because it was worn and not in its original condition, sir!).

Forget Hermes, most stores would not accept worn merchandise. Dunno what he was thinking.

You would be surprised at how many used shoes are returned back to major high end retailers and put back out on the selling floor or shipped out to unsuspecting online customers.

If I could return for refund or even exchange every pair of new shoes I've worn for 20 mins or so and found uncomftable and never worn again I'd either be a very wealthy woman or have an ever changing shoe collection!
