So far, so good! I found an ancient bottle of Goo Gone and put that on the stains. It didn't say how long to leave it on, so I waited a few minutes, then washed it in the machine on warm. I checked the water during the cycle and it was pink, but the bag is drying well. I can still see the bad spots on the bottom, but the one on the side seems to have faded. Thanks for your advice! Thanks!
Have you tried Goo Gone? It's supposed to remove grease stains but I've never tried it myself.
Using the washing machine is a pretty desperate manuever, but if I have tried everything else and I still don't feel comfortable carrying the bag because of the condition - then I think it is worth a try. But you have to be prepared that it may not work and it might even make things worse.
I feel that it is easier to try "extreme cleaning methods" when the bag was inexpensive; but I would find it hard to "play rough" with a bag that costs a lot of money. But again, if I can't carry it because it is soiled than I might as well try to clean it!
Good luck with your rehab!

I love catching your threads! You always do such a great job and revitalizing these old pieces that other people assume to be junk but infact can be cleaned up to restore their natural beauty!
I know there's no need to comment on this thread, but HOLY MOLY! I've not seen this thread before and that's such an awesome job you did on that bag! I'm truly impressed.....and also glad to know that I'm not the only one who will throw a badly stained bag in the washing machine. After all, what do you have to lose?I realize that this is a very old thread (July 2011) but I pulled it up to demonstrate rehabbing a light-colored canvas bag for a TPFer that is struggling to clean a cream-colored Kate Spade canvas bag - and I've discovered that many of the before and after pics have disappeared; so I am going to repost some of the original photos.
Before and after photos of a beige and camel Canvas Bleecker Flap from 1999. The bag was very dirty and had ink marks and was badly stained with red wine but it cleaned up beautifully after some pretty rough treatment including 2 trips through the washing machine!
There's no need to comment on this rehab because it is ancient history, thanks for your patience!
