My aunt recently sent me a 32 cm vert fonce box kelly that she had purchased in the 70's. She had it spa'd before she sent it to me and it looks fabulous. The finish is absolutely gleaming. I have some other kelly's, all of which had straps so I wanted a strap for this bag. I took it to the South Coast Plaza store yesterday to order the strap. The SA said it would take at least 6 months and that the bag would need to be sent in with the order. I left the bag, but it seems odd that I would have to do that. Anyone else experience this?

It took over a year for my straps to be made. There is a possibility that because your leather is older, they may want the bag in hand to match the colour.

I just ordered a sport strap for my kelly this past weekend, they said 6 to 8 months but I did not have to leave my bag.

What was the quoted price for the stamp(s)? Thks

You know, I would ask if they are sure about this having to leave the bag for the whole time and what is the reason for it. It could indeed take a VERY long time for the strap to come. If it is to match the leather I would offer them a clochette. If its some dinky stuff about your bag needing to be checked for authenticity, I would ask (very nicely indeed) to check this with the store manager.

Thanks, Bababebi. This is an excellent idea. The bag does have a clochette so I don't know why that could not be used for color verification. I don't think authenticity was a concern because I had all the paperwork from the bag's recent spa visit. I am going to call the store right now.

I think also.
The other option was to order a canvas strap in a different color...so to avoid to leave the bag.

I'd advise against leaving Ms Vert Fonce Boxcalf Kelly with Hermes unless if you want to send for a spa at the same time. I have heard of horror stories about Hermes mixed up with some of their clients bags and had no idea where the bags left. To reassure, this is not often the case and happen rarely.

As Bababebi mentioned, it'd be best if you can inquire to leave your clochette and not the entire bag. It's impossible for Hermes not to have archived pieces of Vert Fonce Boxcalf as the craftsmen can easily refer to them. Most Vert Fonce boxcalf are similar in tones and have not heard of Vert Fonce tone change over the course of years unlike other colors where there's a probability of tones appear differently in certain periods of time. Another option is to order a Canvas Strap as suggested by Costa.

The same thing happened when I received an older Marron Fonce Kelly from my "aunt" (in my case eBay), I had to leave the bag with them so that they could order a strap to match it. I waited 13th months for the strap....needless to say I was happy when I finally got it back!

Yeah, I had to leave my bag to get just my canvas strap and it was in a still current leather and colour combination ( vache ligee rouge garrance) just a couple of years ago.
And i use the strap all the time now so don't regret the time spent at Hermes to get it right. It took a couple of months for my order to be completed but I imagine with a proper vintage bag it will take longer to source the best fit for colour and leather.
