Old Lady Bags?

So if someone thinks a Kelly screams "old lady" thats a compliment or a diss? You can spin it any way you want but the title of the thread is derogatory. Style is subjective. Its just silly to designate "age appropriateness" to a handbag. When I'm 105 if I want to rock something I'm gonna rock it just to piss people who think that way off!

Being that say the Speedy is about 70 years old (and hell the Kelly is almost 60) is that considered old fashioned? If ya' meant "elegant" or "mature" or even "sophisticated" thats maybe what you should have said. All 3 of those terms have nothing to do with age. I just wish people would examine their motives and think about the terms they use because come on, someone might see a bag on this thread as being described as an "old lady" bag and feel put down.

I kinda took "old lady" to mean vintage...there is nothing cuter than a younger woman wearing an "older" style. It's all about contrasts, and personal style. Today, "old lady" bags are the most coveted...structured, ladylike, harder and smoother leathers, basic silhouettes, not slouchy and boho, nor relaxed or casual...Look at old ads for bags from the 50's and 60's. So many bags created today look like they were inspired from this vintage styling. It's hard to define "old lady" as a genre today.

The older-ladies I know have the BEST style and seem very wise and intelligent on top of that. I love it! I buy a lot of vintage clothes and handbags because I love classic styles and shapes and I really enjoy doing so.

Yes! And so much of it is about styling and how the bag is worn. I used to thing of styles like the Hermes Kelly and the classic Chanel flap as too conservative or "mature," but so many chic women wear them in a rock-n-roll way now, my image of those bags has completely changed.

I agree! It's definitely about how you wear the bag, not the bag itself. I love seeing those "conservative" styles when someone rocks it out in a completely new way.

And then there's the old saying about how people find the things their parents wore or used to be "old fashioned" and inappropriate for them to wear, but the things their grandparents wore or used as "vintage" and trendy once again. So it all depends on the generation you're from! My mother is very sensitive to items from a certain decade looking "old fashioned", whereas in reality - for younger generations and fashion as a whole - the look/s have come back full-force and are current once again. But she will NEVER see them that way because of her point of view and having lived through the trends the first time.

There are lots of looks that take a while to grow on me, though. What I might see as "old fashioned" this year might finally strike me as fashionable next year!

This is so true! I grew up in the 80s and so much of that stuff is hot again, but I just cannot bring myself to wear it again. I would feel like a 13 year old. But it's fun to see the new, modern take on it.

That's exactly what I meant. There r plenty of bags out there that just look like an older style like my grandma used to carry many years ago. Sometimes i pick up a bag and it just doesnt seem right for me. Kinda like someone my age asking if certain bags that teens carry would work for them. I wouldn't carry a bag with tons of sequins on it or wear a sequin hat! Have fun with the topic...dont b so catty or throw a fit like my 3 year old...it wasn't meant to b an argument. My mom, who is in her 70's, is constantly asking me if something looks too old for her! No one wants to look too old fashioned I guess.

I am comfortable with the fact that everyone gets older. I have come to the conclusion that I'm getting older by the day. Especially w my back surgery last year. Whoa! Took me awhile to figure that one out! Lol!!

I often wonder this myself. the way I look at it is. you're as young as you feel. it's what ever you are comfortable with..
I think we all need something light weight.. something workable for everyday..
having bags for special
occasions, bags for perfect summer days and ones for winter /rain.

all going back to personal preference..
some can do with one bag and that's great.. I think you need to be happy and comfortable carrying your bag and really that is all that matters..

I have an elderly lady that comes into my work and she carries an animal print coach jayden.. I think it's great that she is comfortable wearing that:-)

This is true! Everyone needs a bag that works for them. I think my mom constantly asking me if something makes her look old is what brought up this topic. She loves leopard print outfits and bags too. I always associate the leopard print with her. I even buy my 3 year old daughter leopard print outfits and tell her that she's dressing like grandma! She prances around and is so proud. My mom loves the attention too! Lol!

Haha! Yes! I am 34. My sister is 11 years older than me. She lived thru the bell bottoms and whatnot. I keep telling her that bell bottoms or flares might b making a comeback and she refuses to hear it! She doesn't believe they ever will!

I don't beleive there is such thing as old lady There is class. I feel like my mom often chooses more modern styles than me and I'm 23. In the end it's what styles you are comfortable with and how you wear them. I've seen a lot of younger people flawlessly pulling off classic styles.
