First review: Bottega Veneta Resort 2015 wwd

A common laundry accident — specifically when that baby blue shirt gets mixed into a wash of whites — provided the starting point for Tomas Maier’s strong Bottega Veneta resort lineup. “When it comes out with a bleached spot, it looks good and is kind of pretty,” the designer said.

Without actually bleaching the garments (to avoid toxins), Maier worked the effect with a corrosion technique, often overprinting them to enhance the technique on fabrics like cotton poplin and crepe sable. Many of the patterns looked organic with spots and blotches, while others were manipulated into floral motifs, such as on a pastel blue shirt. For evening, the treatment was used on several beautiful black sleeveless maxidresses featuring painterly blush touches.

The accessories also played into the theme: bags were artfully sliced with the house’s signature intrecciato for a delightful look that appeared as if they, too, were caught in the wrong cycle.

Review May 07, 2014, New York by Nicole Phelps style

"I can't show you a stretch pant and a T-shirt." That was Tomas Maier in the Bottega Veneta showroom today, presenting the label's Resort collection for 2015. Some designers do take a straightforward approach to in-between seasons like Resort and Pre-Fall, but Maier's not one of them. BV's creative director is as intrigued by process as he is by the final product, a fact that his new clothes crystalized.

He started with the idea of bleach and how laundering a garment in the stuff can fade it in random ways. Extending that notion, he used a process called corrosion to remove color from pieces in graphic patterns—bleach stripes at the neckline of a crisp cotton shirt, a white floral motif on a lilac top. Other times, the actual substance of a material was changed, as in the case of a dévoré blouse and a jacquard flower-print lamé miniskirt.

Maier's trick was that nothing felt contrived. Industrially washed for a faded effect, his knit sweaters were utterly simple, yet completely divine. And that enviable sense of simplicity extended into his evening dresses. No ball gowns or bustiers here, of course. Maier's long dresses are modeled after tank tops and T-shirts. The ease is built right in; the drama comes from the way he corroded and then over-dyed them. One featured a bold grid pattern, another an abstract, oversize floral. Perhaps the best part: When they go into production, no two dresses will ever be 100 percent the same. "I like that," Maier said, "and it's good for the customer."

Review by Emily Holt vogue.com

When Bottega Veneta creative director Tomas Maier showed his resort collection for the house this morning (the first presentation of the season), he explained that he was inspired by as ordinary a chore as laundry. Think turning a white shirt pink by inadvertently throwing it in with something red or accidentally spilling bleach on a favorite blue oxford. (As for those wondering when was the last time Maier did his own wash? “It happens,” he said with a smile.)

Maier mimicked these common mishaps by printing light silk and cashmere knits from the inside out and then rinsing out the color just enough to leave the light blues and lavenders barely detectable. Crisp button-downs were splashed with white streaks or had faded florals on the shoulder, created by a nontoxic method of lifting (not bleaching) the color out of the fabric. Strips of black mesh were then attached to a blue button-down or crisp lilac skirt for texture and edge. When Maier corroded, as he called his technique, cotton sundresses and then applied yellows or pale peach over the parts that lightened, the result looked like a deep, desert sunset.

Lest this all come off as washed-out, Maier added major sparkle with pastel, lamé box-pleat skirts in Liberty prints, and glittery skimmer flats and high-heeled Mary Janes. It was upbeat and airy and a wonderful start to the season. Maier is welcome to do the laundry anytime.
