Try Qtica Intensive Cuticle Repair Balm for moisturizing. Amazing! And London Butter for softening and pushing back cuticles. Have searched for good cuticle products for years, and these are the best I've found. Found them initially by checking out product reviews online.

I've used the Avoplex from OPI too, but it is way greasier than the Burt's Bee's cuticle cream. I like the BB because it's a little tin and it's not too greasy so I can just put it on every night before bed.

3. Keep focusing on the fact that having healthy cuticles is a must for great looking hands.

I will make this my mantra!

I use a cuticle trimmer. I bring it with me everywhere and I also just keep it with me to use when I think I'll get fidgety. I've had the same problems as you, but using this tool helps relieve my need to pick at my cuticles, and it works a lot better at keeping them neat so I'll less likely pick/bite at them.

I forgot about those! I'll have to pick one of those up too.

my head is spinning from all these product recommendations. I'll have to narrow it down for sure.

You'll see how your nail shape almost changes once you start pampering your cuticles instead of molesting them. The skin will look different and help your nails grow beautiful, just as they deserve. I used to bite, too, but I really hate this habit SO MUCH and know how difficult it is to get rid of. I think it's some childhood issue or something, if I stress about something, I have to take care I don't start again. If you're out of cuticle cream just use whatever lip balm you have around, it's almost as good but a LOT cheaper. Good luck with it:-)

This might sound somewhat idiotic, but at my ripe age of 31 I cannot stop destroying my own cuticles--i pick at them until they bleed and it is ridiculous looking. the only time i can leave my nails alone is when i've had acrylics on--unfortunately i really didn't like the damage to my nails, plus the filing of the nail during appointments was downright painful.

i was wondering if other fake nail methods (slik wrap, diamond tip, gel) are less painful/damaging. i was also wondering if there are any other products/methods i can try that'll provide some "thickness" to my nail (more so than regular polish), but that won't involve an extension tip or filing during installation.

i'd appreciate your thoughts! i've heard "get regular manicures" before as advice--sadly that lasts a day or so before i'm at it again--polish starts chipping, cuticles start drying and i'm at it again. and yes, i use a ton of moisturizing creams on my cuticles--constantly. that doesn't really stop me!

thank you so much in advance!

I used to do this, too. It would be so bad the tips of my fingers would be bloody and raw sometimes. For me it is a nervous habit, and I still do it occasionally - just not to that extent.

There are two things that helped me immensely. The first is, as others have recommended, keeping your hands & fingers moisturized. Bits of dry flaky skin would start me picking, which turns to biting and just goes downhill from there. I love Burt's Bees lemon cuticle butter. I also keep a bottle of lotion handy near the sink and on my bathroom counter and desk at work, and use it often.

Second, the thing that helped me the most is wearing false nails. I wear acrylics off and on for about the last 15 years. I keep mine very short and natural looking - I have a very good nail tech and most people think they are my real nails. I never chew or pick my fingers when I'm wearing them. I am not sure why, I just stop cold turkey when I have them on. I really recommend trying gels or acrylics if you are not opposed to it. Nowadays you can even get the OPI Axxium gel manicures, which is a colored gel overlay (almost like a long lasting manicure) over your natural nail.

One thing that has strangely helped me a lot in the past few weeks (since I posted my own question about problems I was having with my nails) is Biotin. Not only has it made my nails stronger, but simultaneously my desire to pick at/bite my nails has gone WAY down. It's not that I look at my nails and think, "Too pretty, mustn't muck them up"... it's that I COMPLETELY FORGET about them until it's time to put on a new manicure.

I assure you, I've gone very few periods of time in my life since I was 9 years old that I have forgotten to mess with my nails.

Try 5 mg of Biotin daily and see if it helps.
