Hokaplan, are you sure you want an emerald cut or are you swayed by all our opinions? Personally I love emerald and Asscher cuts but I hope you'll choose a cut you and your daughter will love.

If you eventually choose and emerald cut, you might be happy to know that they're cheaper per carat than round brilliants so you could go up bigger for the same budget. BUT because of the openness of the step cut, inclusions and colour tinting are more obvious so you might want to go up in colour and clarity. Also you may need to consider the length/width ratio.

Whichever you choose, I'm sure it'll be a beautiful ring! can't wait to see the final results! Good luck!!

Wow - that is very interesting that they are less $ than the round brilliants. I'm definitely leaning toward emerald cut! evekitti - What color and clarity do you recommend if I want to be near 1/2 carat?

Hehe. I think "very good" is a great choice - a Tiffany SA told me they only get very good to excellent/ideal cuts for rounds, while for their fancy cuts, they "lower the standard" and start with good cuts (because fancy shapes are harder to cut). Therefore, I think you're good with "very good"!

Yeah, evekitti is right - emerald cuts DO show inclusions and color more than other cuts like rounds! It's really interesting how each cut is so different (and not only in shape)!

I would go for F or G colour and no lower than VS1. But what colour and clarity are the tapered baguettes? If they're D/E colour, a G emerald cut may look slightly yellowish next to them.

I don't know color of the baguettes. But I'll definitely have to match them up. I wonder if my jeweler will have exactly what I want. It might take him a few days to find one.

I called my jeweler this morning. They said that they need to see my setting again in person to be able to tell me if they can fit a new stone into it. The store is about 45 minutes away and I didn't have time for the drive today. Tomorrow they have short hours because of inventory. So I'm now looking at Wednesday! But there is a popular store about 10 minutes from my home. So I will run it over now and see what they think. I hope they're open on Mondays!

The local jeweler said that they absolutely cannot switch head on my setting. They said because the design of it is all in one piece. They would have to completely rebuild the ring and it is not worth it. They could never fit a different shape stone. They said the only thing that would work in the original setting is a 1.25 round which is what was in there before. However, a 1.25 round emerald (daughter's birthstone) would fit and the jeweler feels would look beautiful. So they are pricing it out for me. Will keep you posted!

update - Just goes to show that you have to shop around! The local jeweler said that I could not switch head on this setting to accomodate a different shape/size stone. But just for a 2nd opinion, I brought setting to another jeweler and he said no problem. Of course they can change the head! But he had the most gorgeous perfect size green tourmaline anyway. I already talked about this in another thread so sorry for the repetition. But it was around $200 and should be ready in another week!
In the meantime. I found a beautiful princess-cut 1/2 carat VS1 and "G" color for $1200. Thinking of putting that into a setting too! Will keep you posted!
