new idea for DD diamond ring????

I am working on a "glossary" of sorts for the Jewelry section of TPF. When I finish Ill send to Swanky for a little help and then we'll post it.

Head: the prong/bezel/whatever that holds the diamond in place. Many times the Head is a separate piece attached to the shank. The entire piece once assembled is a setting. Some brands consider the head the setting itself, so that can get confusing.

You might be able to get a loose stone put into your old setting but only if the head can be swapped out for one designed to hold a smaller stone.

I noticed a suggestion above to look at the ribbon ring, which I think is a fantastic suggestion.

As for why the Novo was unappealing, that particular stone may just be a "grayer" stone. It also might not be as well cut as some other Novo stones.

I believe an Emerald cut has more table presence (compared to the cushion)

Under certain lighting, stones may appear darker. Tiffanys is notorious for having fabulous halogen lighting though! Everything sparkles there.......even beach glass!! :D

I thought of a colored stone too but didn't say it! She is a May baby and her birthstone is emerald. I will explore that idea also! You know, I will eventually get that Tiffany ring - LOL!

I think you should get that Tiffany ring for YOU.........hold off w/ your daughter.

It's perfectly OK to treat yourself! ;)

I agree 100% with Contessa - your DD is still young and you have time to find something to hand down to her when the time comes. YOU, on the other hand, deserve a treat!!! I always believe and swear by the blue box :p If you are interested, I saw a .63ish center ribbon ring for around $6,200 (I colored IF clarity) today. . .they also had smaller diamond centers and they all looked really beautiful.

However, if you are going with the original e-ring setting, I love the idea of an emerald cut with the tapered baguettes. The baguettes will mirror the emerald cut and will really accent the center stone well. Emerald cuts have cool, angular lines and have a wonderfully glassy look. Bad emerald cuts/lower quality diamonds will look well, like glass. There are also some funky proportioned emerald cuts out there (I frequent Blue Nile's "recently purchased rings" section), so you'd have to really pick and choose that emerald diamond well!

I also think that the original e-ring setting that your DH bought and proposed to you with has a lot of sentimental value and is a representation of love, and before you reset it, you probably wore it every single day for years. The ring has wonderful history and I just love the idea of you giving it to your DD as a gift. If my mom gave me something like that, I would be so incredibly touched!

kohl_mascara - I love your last post and totally agree with you. I think it would be so cherished and have such sentimental value. Presently, it is an empty setting sitting in a drawer of my jewelry box. I can't wait to find out if my 1st choice - emerald shape diamond would work. My 2nd choice would be a regular emerald stone. How much do you think a really nice emerald shape diamond at 1/2 carat and changing the "head" on the ring would cost? The Tiffany ones are probably in the high $4,000 but I already have the ring. I wonder if it might be closer to $3,000.

I just checked Blue Nile and their .50 - .55 emerald very good cuts range from $1000 (G, VS1) to $2400 (D,E/VVSI, IF). I would talk to your jeweler about changing the head, but I would think that it wouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars. All they have to do is cut off the head and solder a new one onto it or if you want to keep the old baguettes, change the original head and bring in the original tapered baguettes in towards the center. But I am not sure. . .I have never done this before. :-s But your guestimate is probably on point - if you decide to get a higher-end emerald cut, it should not cost more than 3k.

That is what I figured. I looked at Blue Nile earlier today. My only concern was that they had no ideal cut in the 1/2 carat size. Is "very good" also good? I'm really hoping that this will work out for me. My jeweler opens at 10:30 on Monday!
