It has a slight sheen because the leather if buffed and it's not fully matte. But it's not shiny. The leather is thick, soft and supple but I think the bag will retain its shape because it's not large enough to start drooping or slouching. Maybe if you carried it with a really heavy item every day, it will start to show.
I agree - I like several colours but I am very much drawn to the grey (probably because I prefer the silver hardware). I like gold hardware when it's (subtle) matte, pale or antique.

I went into the boutique today and they didn't have the claret out yet! Weird!!
I saw the colors in 2 stores in Vegas, but the store near me still had the green/violet colors.
Just as well, if I had seen it again I might not have been able to resist!

If you look through this TPF thread, you will see several of my photos. The bags arrived at MK boutiques first; later I saw some at Holt Renfrew and took more photos.
Apple and Optic White are on sale already on the MK website. Even the black was on sale but now, the black is full price. If I find these on sale in the boutique, I don't know if I can resist.

I like it too - not "better" exactly but I like it. Boutique does not have optic white or apple green on sale like the website but they do have all the colours in stock. Between the boutique and Holt Renfrew, there are lots of these bags available...one can only hope for mark downs
I think they did it just to demonstrate how it would look without the lock. It worked because I really like it both ways.....
They have other displays of same bag with the lock in its usual spot. I think they just want to be creative and let folks know that it's a real functional padlock with key - sort of cute. I didn't know (think) that the lock scratches the vitello leather? I hope not...right now, it's not my problem anyway because I don't own one
