Moving Designer Bags Across Country

How about:
-stuff handbags with tissue paper.
-put handbags in their sleeper bags.
-buy huge Rubbermaid 40 gallon bins to hold the bags.
-have movers pack up the bins (which have been packed & taped up by you).

This is what I did when I moved a couple years ago, & it worked well. Those bins stack nicely too, so you won't have to worry about the boxes getting crushed. Congrats on getting married!

I think this is the best idea yet! Just make sure you insure them and are have someone there when they're delivered.

I must disagree with this. Awhile back, I UPS'd some conference materials ahead of the conference from Sacramento CA to Washington DC. There was much confusion. UPS did get the packages across the country, where they remained on the truck, & were returned a couple weeks later.

It would seem that there's a greater liklihood of packages getting lost with a whole bunch of other people's packages, than having all on the same vehicle belonging to the same person.

Hi all! I need some advice from moving across country.... from East Coast to West Coast. I have a sizable collection of designer bags and accessories quite a few large boxes. Then of course my designer shoes.... AHH! I'm debating the best way to move them since the DH and I are shipping our cars and not taking any furniture.

My options are:
  • Ship them with the few items we are taking with us, with the moving company (we are thinking PODS? but still in the research phase)
  • Ship them FedEx or UPS which will probably be pricey and I will be concerned the entire time the bags are not with me, lol.
  • And the other is to check them in on our flight and keep excess at my parents house and just keep on taking bags with me every time I'm back in the East Coast. But still have nightmares about my bags getting stolen or having them lose my luggage.
  • Shipping them with our cars in the trunk. Again risky.

I'm open to suggestions as well, these are just what I thought of, off the top of my head. Anyone have experience with a long distance move... and our designer goods? :p

unless you have ridiculously expensive purses (i.e. exotic birkins) just have them packed and moved with your furniture. if you have pods, I think you provide your own lock so no one should be able to get in. I've done long distance moves a few times and this is the best, easiest, most convenient way. make sure you have good insurance coverage for peace of mind.

i definitely would not put them in the truck of the car.

i think the pod idea is safe, as well as putting them in moving boxes.. . but maybe i'd use special tape that shows if it's been broken open or not?

Also think you should insure all of them just in case!

I think the most important thing here is to definitely UNPACK them ASAP when they arrive at your destination- I just packed everything as I do my closet, and everything came back out 'alive'!!! Just don't over pack/smoosh...
(Obv these boxes were the FIRST ones I unpacked!!!)

My only experience with it isn't so good. I lost my home in a tornado this past summer. Sad I know, but I have an even better home now so I'm over it!!! Anyways my bags were in a closet and they made it fine but with everything going on I didn't think about it. Then the insurance company sent in a team of people who specialize in recovering and storing property and they packed up everything and left. I only realized it when I got our things back and started unpacking that they had stuffed them all in boxes as many as they could fit. I was a wee bit stressed when I started unpacking them and they were no longer the shapes they were supposed to be. Most of them have recovered but a few definitely are the worse for the wear. I would recomend boxes with packing peanuts to help keep them from rubbing against one another and from being squished.
Great point!!! I'm so sorry about this horrendous experience...

Agreed- UPS is NOTORIOUS for losing packages!!! I just read they lost someone's $80,000 (?!) inheritance check and said 'sorry, here's your $32 back for shipping'... (!!!) I'd drive it myself OR follow it closely...

I want to write this post to share my experience recently moving from the west coast to east coast with my luxury collection. That's always a big concern for me about expanding my luxury collection. Maybe one day, when my collection is too large, I'll consider driving so I can move all my stuff safely. Currently my collection is less than 10 bags and some shoes, SLGs, scarves and belts.

Since neither of us wanted to drive this time, my husband and I flew across the country recently and my luxury items had to fit in our carry-on bags. I told him the carry-ons are only for my designer items. :) We sold all of our furnitures and shipped the remaining stuff in boxes across the country. In the boxes, I put any luxury packaging boxes (e.g. Chanel, LV, etc).

In my carry-on, my SLGs and luxury belts were packaged in their boxes or in other smaller bags if I can fit them nicely. Then I stuffed the smaller bags in large bags or on their own depending on the jigsaw puzzle. I wrapped the bags in soft clothes or dust bag and filled any remaining space with soft padding. I made sure the carry-ons were not so stuffed that closing them would dent the bags. Luckily, I only have a few pairs of designer shoes (e.g. Manolos) and I can fit them in the carry-ons with their dust bags. I put the actual shoe boxes stuffed with clothes in my checked bags. Finally, I carried my Neverfull as my personal item aboard. I wanted to avoid putting any valuables in my checked luggages. In the end, we arrived at our final destination in one piece and my bags and accessories were all in good condition. My Speedy 25 was a little squished on one side but it went back to normal after a day.

Hopefully, people find this helpful. I'd love to hear other experiences and tips if you have them.

That's great! I just recently watched Stella Connolly's video about FedEx losing her bags (temporarily), and I was shocked she trusted them with such expensive items! I never ship anything of value - jewelry, bags, etc.
