Hello,
I plan on deciding to ask for a Moissanite engagement ring besides a Diamond. Aside from the fact that I want something that stands out and tiny little Diamonds just don't look right on me and for the size stone I want.. a Diamond would bankrob me and my DBF.. ^^ We're still pretty young and just don't have that kind of money to throw down on a ring.. (he did mention something down the road that when we do settle down and have a very steady income a Diamond would be in the near future.. :D)

I was reading up on Moissanite and that it has just about the same aspects as a Diamond but I have yet to see any comparisons or such.

I was wondering if any of you lovely tPF`ers own any Moissanite pieces and Diamond pieces and if I could see some pictures of them side by side as well as your opinions on them. ^^;

Also I heard the bigger the Moissanite you can start seeing yellow.. I plan on picking something around 6.5-7mm cushion cut.. would that be a safe size to still be able to see no yellowing? ^^;

Thank you guys in advance! :yes:

I've just read somewhere that moissanite sparkles like crazy at natural lighting, but not so much at indoors.
I wonder if it's true. I'd like to have some moissanite studs as an option for vacations.

I believe most JC Penney stores carry moissanite. Also, I have heard that moissaniteco.com has a good return policy - how about ordering a loose stone and checking it out IRL before you decide?

My husband is in the jewellery business and I can tell you that it is a valid choice to get a fake diamond in a real setting. Sometimes even with real side or pave diamonds to make it look more authentic. Theaverage person looking at your ring on your hand would not be able to tell. I think its a very responsible thing to do if you are young, still saving for your future, and dont have the $ spare. I think its far better than going into debt for a stone.

On the topic of saving $, you dont even have to have an er to get engaged. My sister who is a doctor and her dh did not get a ring for many years and they could well afford one. Another trend I am seeing alot, especially amongst the wealthy crowd I know, is just a fine eternity band worn. there are on older gals who probably want to look young and carefree, but could afford to spend like the movie stars if they wanted to.

So these days anything goes. People want to sometimes be outside the square, and you dont have to feel pressured to conform to a diamond solitaire.

One piece of advice......you can always buy a diamond, you are never too old. My Mum just got a 3 carat diamond and she had to wait till she was in her 60`s. She also got her braces done in the last few years. Sometimes you have to wait for things, but it doesnt mean you will never get them.

And getting engaged is an excitement in itself, the ring is just icing!!!!

well said!

my husband and I didnt have alot of money to spend on a diamond either, and they are expensive, so we looked at all of our options. And we choose a Yellow Sapphire....so thats always an option too. To go for a gem stone. You have to love your ring no matter what!

I wish the search was up, b/c there have been a lot of threads on moissanite.

Here's a photo I found in a search:

I think moissanite is normally sparklier and I think it has double refraction (?) so the lighting in this photo may be off. The cut looks a bit different too or it could be the angle. They are trying to sell a product, so it could be intentional too that they did that. Anyway, just a reference point.

I know some ladies here have pieces too, so hopefully they'll see and post.

i have probably mentioned about 50 times that i wear moissanite earrings daily, and love them. they perform like a diamonds in the sense that they don't cloud up like a cz. you can clean them and treat them like diamonds...every cz i have ever had, looked pasty after a short time.

i think the photo above is skewed, because the moissanite has a reflection on it...it looks like it was purposefully set at a different angle.

i think it is an excellent option, but you have to be picky...there are some yucky ones out there. find someone who will let you select the whitest one available.

congrats on your upcoming engagement, that is the most important thing...you can always get a diamond later. it really isn't that big a deal.

I know someone who has a wedding set with a 1.5 moissanite as the center stone and two smaller diamonds on either side. She had it made for her at a local jeweler, and I can tell you that it is a fabulous piece of jewelry. From what I have just read about it, the hardness is 9.25 on the Mohs scale, which is right up there for durability. I can tell you that her ring sparkles, and no one is the wiser....except for me because she told me about it. Now, I am going to buy some pretty studs for my ears for myself. Especially earrings. Why put diamonds in your ears when no one should be getting that close to you to scrutinize the difference unless they want to kiss you. I'd rather spend the money that I saved for an extra handbag or two. And when I see it at Penney's (and they sell it at other jewelers, too), I think it is very attractive and nothing like a CZ.

Oh why is the search function not working? I really want to know a reliable website that I can buy from.

I agree with Compass Rose that I'd rather wear a man made diamond and use the money for a new handbag hehehe...

If you want a beautiful stone you may want to take a look at the ASHA diamond simulant,it's more realistic than moissanite.The stones were much higher in cost when they were first released to the market,they have become such a popular diamond replacement that even moissaniteco.com will soon be offering these beauties on their website in the near future.

The Asha product is in a class of its own!:heart:
