Yeah it’s definitely Italy thought provoking for fashion / dress jewellery but natural diamond is the standard and remains so. Moissanite has been around for quite some time and we still cling to what is most ‘real’ (diamond) like.
We havent abandoned diamond standards to rock huge mermaid rocks shooting green and blue rainbows.

Going back to the OPs original question I would retain the original diamond and go for a natural diamond three stone for the e- ring upgrade - and, go for a moissanite tennis bracelet or earring studs on the side.
I would add a nice eternity band.
Part of the value of the ring is the brand name. If OP gets the ring transformed, her investment will lose ton of value.

Oh of course I forgot it was Tiffany.

Sorry for all my typos. I type with my fat thumbs.
i think maybe I would still consider looking at the initial purchase as a sentimental sunk cost - it’s a big ask to give up your initial engagement ring / diamond. I have upgraded over the years but it is nice to retain your special jewellery as you move through life, even if repurposed, remodelled etc.
I have remodelled brand name jewellery in the past. That might make me sound like a philistine, but I looked at it as my personal piece to enjoy as i wished. I bumped into my sales lady years later and admitted I had added more diamonds to my band, she was shocked! I never thought of the brand over-riding my personal ownership, enjoyment and preferences lol.

I will say I’m in a large city and our Tiffany doesn’t require this rule. Would you ever sell your Tiffany? The one plus is they do resell better than most non-branded E-ring s.

Really?? So, what is the Tiffany engagement ring upgrade policy in your city (e.g. you can upgrade your Tiffany engagement ring in any pricing)? Yes, I do plan to sell the current engagement ring, and put the money towards the engagement ring upgrade. I likely won't upgrade my ring at Tiffany though. Even though Tiffany as a brand name does resell better than others, but I'll probably only get 1/3 of what we paid?

If you want a really affordable nice diamond, how about a reputable pawn shop or even EBay?
I bought some diamond on EBay and had them evaluated by a local appraiser.
It checked out and I got a great deal.
Also check private sellers as well.
Why do you want to upgrade your ring?

Buying a diamond ring on eBay is probably not what I want. Just too lazy to get it evaluated and I am not a huge online shopper. Lol.
Why upgrade the engagement ring... because when we got married, our budget was quite limited (things did add up - wedding dress, photography etc.). Now that we are doing better financially, this may be a good opportunity.

Interesting perspective! I see where you are coming from. If you intend to keep it for your personal sentimental value and enjoyment, then maybe the loss in value in the brand probably doesn't matter much. I personally still can't take the loss in value though. Lol. I'd either upgrade my ring at Tiffany (which I don't think I'd), or I'd sell my current engagement ring and put the money towards the upgrade .

Tiffany will reset the ring. It might be worth looking into if you are planning to remodel instead. They can add side stones or change into a different style. It is a matter of finding out cost and is it worth the investment.

Oh! Tiffany does reset the ring? I didn't know that. What I found sometimes is that every Tiffany store seems to have slightly different policy. I should ask about the resetting option.

yep. When we almost went the Tiffany route for the upgrade I asked and they said nope. Never was an issue.

Hi OP, I would not get a J colour upgrade nor would I choose moissanite because it is not a real diamond. I’m too sentimental to upgrade my engagement ring so I would elect a third option which is to get an eternity band. More bang for your buck than a J colour solitaire.
