Thanks for posting, I was thinking of trying the 38 on my 42 as well. Does it stay in place? My only fear would be if the band wasn't securely attached to the watch, would it come off? I'm really surprised they don't offer both sizes. I know a lot of women to have the 42 and prefer the larger watches. I just went through all the bands, and don't see a single 42 available.
The attachment is super secure since both the 42mm and the 38mm watches have the same 'connection' size (those 3 black/silver bumps on the bands).

My only qualm is that the 38mm band will be a little smaller around the wrist on a 42mm watch because the bigger watch piece is taking up more space than the 38mm watch would! If you have big wrists I wouldn't recommend using a 38mm band on a 42mm watch.

So my watch arrived about 7:00pm yesterday....and I don’t like it. The Gold Aluminum is rose gold, and goes with virtually nothing. I don’t know what they’re thinking. No Apple bands match other than the two sports bands they make for it I tried all the bands in the Apple Store) and neither do the Beechwood or Chalk Coach straps. The rose gold looks ghastly with the red edging on the Chalk band (my SA agrees) and the Beechwood is even worse.

I’m toying with exchanging the watch for a stainless steel casing, but it comes close to doubling the cost and includes a red dot I hate, so that doesn’t seem to make sense.

I have the Black Tea Tose band coming, and I just exchanged the Chalk band for Melon. My Watch looks good against both the Black and Melon Rogues, so I think the straps should be fine. I’m hoping both straps arrive next week before we leave on our trip. If they look good, great. Otherwise the watch and all the bands are going back.

It’s definitely not love - more like meh, might be tolerable. I swear, nothing other than the spirts bands has really matched this new “gold” aluminum.

I don't think it clashes, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. what do you think?

Edit: It's a no. I've learned the hard way over the years that if I don't love something at the outset, it never gets used. It's going back tonight. Also, that off-center rivet in the yellow flower would make me crazy.

That rivet would haunt me too.
