mixing costume and fine jewelry

I consider costume jewelry stuff that is plastic or rhinestones, basically if you walk in the store it would not be in a jewelry case because there is no real value. At least that is how I think of costume jewelry. It is is real diamond, pearl, gemstone etc...even if inexpensive, I would consider it fine jewelry.

 I wish more people thought like you! When I think "costume" I also think plastic and rhinestone. "Fine" jewelry is technically diamond, platinum, gold, etc. but it seems like there has to be an in-between that isn't considered costume or fashion but also not "fine". Hmmm... :s

My interpretation is similar to most here.

But I dont think it has to do with the cost of the item. Like anything you can get cheap or mega expensive versions of a product. So although costume jewellery may be considered so due to it not being of high value, you can still pay thousands of dollars for a designer piece, and it is not deemed to be fine jewellery due to the value. Alternatively, with fine jewellery, can can pay very little, and it may be a cheap or low end product, but it is still fine jewellery not costume. For me personally it is the design that seals the deal on the definition.

But at the end of the day, all jewellery is frivilous fun made for pure enjoyment...yes????:yahoo::yahoo:

I totally agree! ^^there should be a happy medium with jewelry and that jewelry is a frivilous enjoyment. I just love, my next purchase after the holidays might be a green amethyst pendant to match my ring I just bought. Also, I would love to get some matching earrings.
My other favorite thing (little addiction) is the target clearance section in the jewelry aisle. I love finding their plastic bracelets and necklaces on sale. I also love their headbands. That is my little guilty pleasure.

I always wear my J12 on a daily basis now, but I love to wear it with costume jewelry like my LV inclusion bracelet, Chanel costume jewelry, or Juicy costume jewelry. Since my J12 is huge and is kind of "blingy", I like to tone it down by wearing costume jewelry without a lot of diamonds or jewels. Besides, I'm not going to whip out my diamonds and other fine jewelry to go to school and work.

I totally agree with everything you've said! :woohoo: I'm so glad you made this thread because funky costume jewellery doesn't really seem to be mentioned much on here and I mix my pieces ALL the time! I don't own loads and loads of fine jewellery because I'm still a student and can't afford it/don't want any expensive pieces to get wrecked :push:

Browsing for jewellery in the clearance section is definitely exciting, especially when you find a beautiful piece to match something else you've got! :graucho:

^^I'm a student too! So I buy fine jewelry when I can, but I have more costume jewelry. I just buy what I like. My next jewelry purchase (minus the impulse buys) will be a matching pair of green amethyst pendant and earrings. That will be my birthday gift to myself.

I don't own any costume jewelery, which I consider to be anything made from a non precious metal, a non metal (like wood) or faux stone. So for me silver, gold, and platinum is what I own. I am starting to get into gemstone jewelery. I've got my eye on a green amethyst pendant and ring set that just came in at my job. Maybe I'll let dh buy it for me for Christmas if I don't buy it myself. They're gorgeous matching pieces in white gold with a thin ring of diamonds around each piece and very reasonably priced. I work in jewelery part time and get a massive discount, and I'm done pillaging my bank account and dh's for diamond jewelery. It's time to move to gemstones! Personally, even if it's an LV piece, if it's made of a non precious metal (gold filled, gold plated or whatever), I consider it costume. Conversely, silver hoops wouldn't be fine jewelery, per se, but it's not costume jewelery either. I think if mixing costume and fine jewelery is your thing, go for it. There's nothing wrong with that.

Yep. I own LV and Chanel jewelry that I definitely consider costume. They're not cheap by any means, but since they're not solid gold/platinum/silver and don't have real diamonds (just crystals) I don't consider them fine jewelry although they are made by a high-end company.

Yep, I'm exactly the same ;) I went shopping yesterday, spotted the most gorgeous necklace and bought it straight away haha talk about impulse buying! :shame:

The amethyst pendant and earrings sound really lovely! Happy birthday! Mines coming up soon too, currently eyeing a couple of things atm :graucho:

I love all of my vintage costume jewellry and I don't hesitate to combine it with my important jewellry. The workmanship and design in some of my costume is no different than if they were set with precious stones. If the piece speaks to you;you can make it work.
