Frank Clegg has bags under $1000. They are made in the US. I don't know if I would consider their bags "unique"... they have more simple, minimal, classic looks.
I also love unique bag designs!
Building Block, X Nihilo, and Danse Lente are pretty unique yet minimal. Charles et Charlus seems really nice and classic with clean designs. Skagen is on the lower end in terms of price. Eudon Choi seems to have really cool designs, but they seem a bit hard to get in the US. These are all around $500 too, which is great
Other minimalistic/unique design brands: cueroandmor, strathberry, lautem, baggu, nisolo, creatures of comfort, lotuff, TL180, trademark, milma, von Holzhausen, NO/AN, elleme, deadly ponies, vereverto, vasic, clare v, little liffner, marsell, ceri hoover
Do you have any Danse Lente bags, or have you seen them IRL? I am super tempted by a couple styles, but am afraid to take the plunge without any reviews.

Probably because they are so new they only have one season out! They seem gorgeous and reasonably priced. They're sold on Moda Operandi, Farfetch, and Net-a-Porter as well as their own website so maybe among those four retailers you'd be able to find a good shipping/return policy? No free returns from anywhere for Canada, plus there would be the duties to deal with!

I've ordered two minimal, classic-style bags from Mon Purse. You can customize your leather, color, and hardware, and add embossing if you want. No visible logos. Can't wait to see the quality, but from all I've researched it should be good.

Hi - just got word from Mon Purse that one of the bags has finally shipped, so I can't tell you about the quality yet. Sadly, the red patent camera bag is still a month away from being ready so I cancelled it because I'm leaving for a six-month trip in 2 weeks and I want something to take with me! I'll do updates and reveal on the thread that's been started about Mon Purse!
did you end up getting one? which one did you choose and how do you like it? and some ralph lauren bags look very nice

I just stumbled upon Ateliers Auguste while browsing instagram today. They have a really sleek-looking bag called the Monceau that comes in 2 sizes (regular and mini). It sort of gives off a Mansur Gavriel / APC kind of vibe to me.
