I think some of MK's bags are really nice, while others not so much. Same thing with the M by MK lines - there are some really nice bags (esp for the price range), while some of the bags just aren't anything spectacular. There's no real consistency there.
The one MK bag that I found at TJMaxx (the ID Chain Satchel), which retails for $1200 is a REALLY nice bag - I still can't believe I was able to get it for $300!!! The leather is heavenly - soft & buttery - and the lining is a nice, thick, rich suede. The bag is constructed nicely with beautiful details. It definitely compares with other bags in the same price range (a few
Prada bags come to mind and Mui Mui). He makes a smaller shoulder bag with the same kind of leather and lining - and that one retails for only $495, which I think is very reasonable for the quality of bag that it is.
There were a few other MK bags at TJMaxx that I was not at all impressed with. One of them was a hobo bag with fringe on the front (I think Jessica Simpson had the same bag in a leather/suede combo). The leather was VERY stiff and hard, and seemed to scuff very easily. The lining was a foil-like leather and didn't look nice at all. The other bag was a large suede & leather shoulder bag - it also had the same foil-like lining. Neither one of those bags were anything to brag about (IMO), yet they both had retail prices of $1395!!!
The Michael by MK line is a little bit better. Some of those bags are really nice, esp for the price range (the Astor Satchel for $295 and Darlington Grab Bag for $318 are two of my favs!!). Coincidently, I just received a catalog today from Michael Kors. There were a few of the higher end bags (including the bag shown above and the one I got) shown inside, but most of the bags that were shown were from the Michael by MK line. To me, it looks like he's producing more bags for the lower end line, and not so many higher priced bags. I don't know, maybe that makes them more exclusive??
