Michael Kors Michael Kors ID Chain Collection - Inspired by His Own Design?

The python bag is Michael by Michael Kors. Retail was $428, I think.

I owned an ID chain from the collection line and to be honest, I thought the MMK versions looked so cheap in comparison. And they are, obviously, but I was surprised how LQ the chain detailing seemed. I think the MMK version is more popular, though, so I'm probably alone in that opinion. I couldn't sell off the collection one to save my life and the MMK's were going for twice as much.

I'm pretty sure he did the same thing with another style but I can't recall which one it was.

Wow! Really? While I can understand why the Michael by MK line is popular, I'd think the Collection ID Chain bag would be in higher demand, esp if he's no longer making them. I love suede linings and that was one of the things I loved most about the bag - I'd be willing to pay 2x as much as a MbyMK one for that reason alone, not to mention the collect-ability factor!

I should have told you when I was selling it, then lol Mine was a patent satchel and went for $130, and around the same time the similar MMK version sold for $299 - To each their own, I guess.

It was the Heidi that Luv2Shop1 posted about that I couldn't remember the name of. The Collection one is lined in canvas and the MMK has the logo lining, and at least in the ones I've seen, the pebbled leather of the Collection is a little bit thicker.

I used to really love MK but like alliemia, I was turned off when he started making the cheaper versions. Sometimes I can find them for $50 or so at TJ's and those are fine for throw around bags, but I don't know if I'd pay much more than that these days. Personally, I just don't want to shell out a fair amount of money only to have a cheaper version mine could be mistaken for come out months later. It's like if MJ made a stam for MBMJ out of PVC (I'll forget the Parachute Stam doesn't exist) with bird lining. It would sort of ruin the original version a little.

The original Heidi was definitely higher quality...the hardware and the leather were both different. The leather was thicker and obviously better quality.

I agree with Faith_Ann...by knocking off his own design with a lower quality bag it makes the original collection bag feel less "special".

The Heidi satchel debuted in Fall 2009...and a year later, the MbMK version is available. That's just too soon!

I think the ID chain bag followed the same route...a year between releases...which is one of the reasons why I can't bring myself to buy MK collection line bags...what's the point if they'll be mass produced and available for $50 at discount stores in a year?

All that said, if I see a bag I love, love, love...I'm sucker enough to buy it! :p

I thought there was another one:

I was looking for an old MJ ad today and found a disc with pics from several years ago that I made when we bought a new PC -- I know the pics aren't the greatest, but look at what I found!!

this is the bag I found at TJMaxx so many years ago and really regret returning!

Look at that yummy suede lining!!:drool:

You know it's funny, if you start looking for it you'll find that many, many MK bags are later offered under MMK and MFF MMK (Made for Factory outlet).

Also, the Beverly is also available in an MFF /outlet version as well.

OK, I'm going to run and duck after I post this for fear of getting shot - but I like the MMK ones much better. Maybe quality wise this is a better bag (although I'm not personally a fan of the sude lining, but I understand the quality), but from a design perspective, I like my MMK one better. But fringe is always a dealbreaker for me on anything - bags, boots, coats, whatever.

Running and hiding now. . . . :sos:

you don't have to run & hide!!;)
I know that fringe and tassels aren't for everyone and I'm not normally drawn to it either, unless it's done in a "quiet manner" - you weren't far off tho when you mentioned quality. There is quite a bit a difference between the two. The original was almost feather light (IMO, anyhow, esp compared to other bags I carry). The leather was buttery soft but thick and durable. Even the hardware on the bag was more substantial in that a lot of it was brass.

I like bags that are smooshy soft, slouchy with leather like butter (and I've always been a fan of suede linings!) -- the MbyMK ones are a little too thick and "structured" for me. I know a lot of people prefer more structured bags and/or heavier leather.

I just wish he hadn't completely eliminated the higher priced version when he created the lower priced MbyMK ones

i agree, knocking himself off and stopping the production of most of the collection bags made me turned off to MK. my id chain bag in pool is such amazing qualtiy. when i first saw id chain MMK in macys, i ran over all excited, then was like wtf is this?! the quality is no where near the same, and he is asking $498, which is over the top for what he was offering. so unless more collection bags come back, i may just have the one MK.

i do continue to buy the watches however.
