Lifetime’s Michael Jackson Movie Will Get Right What Joseph Fiennes’s Got Wrong

As Joseph Fiennes and Sky Arts recently found out, playing—and casting—Michael Jackson is no easy gig. But it looks like another network is set to give it a shot: at a T.C.A. panel on Friday, Lifetime announced to reporters—including Vanity Fair’s Joanna Robinson—that it will soon air a tribute film to the late King of Pop. Rest easy, though: the network has already cast its star, and seems to have gotten right what Sky Arts got wrong.

Navi, whose site touts him as the globe’s No. 1 Michael Jackson impersonator, will bring his performance to the small screen, Lifetime announced. The story will unfold from the perspective of Jackson’s bodyguards. The film, which will drop this year, will be titled Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland. It’s based on Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days, the best-selling book published by two of Jackson’s bodyguards in 2014. Former Motown chief Suzanne de Passe will executive produce, alongside Madison Jones and Robert Teitel (Barbershop franchise, Notorious).

Fans of the King of Pop—as well as his daughter, Paris Jackson—were less than thrilled by the casting of Fiennes, a white actor, in Urban Myths, which debuted a trailer this week with a tone that some fans deemed disrespectful. On Twitter, Paris Jackson called the snippets she saw “insulting, not just towards my father, but my godmother liz [Taylor] as well.” She added, “where is the respect? they worked through blood sweat and tears for ages to create such profound and remarkable legacies. shameful portrayal.” Perhaps, then, Lifetime is already on track to produce something more in line with fans’ expectations.

Paris Jackson is surprised...

Paris Jackson Says She Was ‘Surprised’ Network Canceled Controversial Michael Jackson Episode After Backlash
Paris Jackson, the 18-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson, said she was “surprised” but happy with Sky Arts’ decision to cancel the upcoming episode of anthology series Urban Myths: A Brand New Collection of TV Comedies that featured white actor Joseph Fiennes as the late pop icon.

“I’m surprised the family’s feelings were actually taken into consideration for once, we all really do appreciate it more than y’all know,” Paris wrote on Twitter, Friday, in response to a user’s tweet about the decision.

Other members of the large Jackson family spoke out about the episode being pulled, including T.J. Jackson, who wrote on social media, “Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard. As I said it wasn’t comedy, it was mockery with no taste. A great victory for his legacy!”

T.J. is the son of Michael’s brother Tito Jackson. Taj Jackson, T.J.’s brother, also celebrated Sky Arts’ move online.

“Thank you to the fans, you continue to fight for my Uncle Michael’s legacy,” he said. “And thank you to the media, for covering the extreme backlash.”

Urban Myths: A Brand New Collection of TV Comedies is an eight-part series that recreates rumored stories about celebrities. In the episode “Elizabeth, Michael & Marlon,” Fiennes portrays the late singer on an alleged road trip that Michael supposedly took with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando after Sept. 11, 2001.

After the trailer’s debut earlier this week, Paris wrote on Twitter that she was “so incredibly offended” by Fiennes’ portrayal, adding that it “honestly makes me want to vomit.”

She said, “it angers me to see how obviously intentional it was for them to be this insulting, not just towards my father, but my godmother liz as well.”

Of the decision to pull the episode, Sky Arts said in a series of tweets, “This decision was taken in light of the concerns expressed by Michael Jackson’s immediate family. We set out to take a light-hearted look at reportedly true events & never intended to cause any offense. Joseph Fiennes fully supports our decision.”

When Fiennes casting was first announced in 2016 it was met with backlash online. He told the Associated Press at the time, “I deal in imagination, so I don’t think imagination should have rules stamped on them.”

Please help me understand.
Was this a full length movie? or tv-series.
Was it just supposed to be funny? Tasteless?
How is this different from the old SNL skit with MJ and Elizabeth Taylor on the roller-coaster?

It was an episode of a TV show called Urban Myths and it was described as being "lighthearted". The difference between that and the skit you posted is that all of the principals involved are dead now. Michael, Liz, and Johnnie Cochran were still alive when the SNL skit was made. So taking a comedic look at a road trip (that many believe never actually happened) could be considered disrespectful to their memories and hurtful to their families.

Katherine Jackson Seeks to Join Lawsuit Against Michael Jackson Estate

Michael Jackson's mother Katherine Jackson has filed legal paperwork to join a lawsuit against the executors of the King of Pop's estate over a stake of ownership in the Michael Jackson Company.

In the initial lawsuit, which has occupied the courts since 2013, former Jackson associates Broderick Morris, Qadree El-Amin, Adean King, and Raymone Bain claim that the singer promised them a combined 15-percent stake in his company.

While Katherine Jackson has a 10-percent ownership and the role of officer in the Michael Jackson Company following her son's 2009 death, in a motion filed to the California Superior Court in early-February, she asserts that important estate matters have been made without her input.

The defendants, John Branca and John McClain, are the executors of Jackson's estate. Lawyers for Branca did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Although I am a principal beneficiary of the Michal Jackson Family Trust, I was not informed by the Executors of Mr. Al-Amin's December 20, 2012 letter; nor did the Executors keep me informed on the progress of this action or the progress of the Estate of Jackson case," Katherine Jackson wrote in her brief.

El-Amin, a "close friend and confidant of Michael Jackson," said in a statement, "Mrs. Jackson deserves her ownership of The Michael Jackson Company and to make decisions on major company issues. It's what Michael wanted—he trusted her more than anyone. She was left 40 percent of the Michael Jackson Estate and can make Branca and McClain pay her what she is entitled to and demand to be involved in decision making—if they don't she has the power to fire them. They're an amazing disgrace."

At the crux of Morris, El-Amin, King and Bain's argument against the Jackson estate is a document from May 1st, 2006 meeting in Tokyo with the King of Pop. At the meeting, the first of the "Board of Directors of the Michael Jackson Company," the singer, as chairman of the board, gave himself a 75-percent stake in his own company, with Katherine Jackson and Bain receiving 10-percent. El-Amin, King and Morris were all handed a 1.6-percent share.

Jackson also expressed his desire for his son Prince Jackson to take over as chairman when he completed school.

In the lawsuit, the four plaintiffs argue that Branca and McClain "repudiated" their ownership stake upon Jackson's death.

An April 19th hearing has been set in Los Angeles to determine whether Katherine Jackson can become involved with the lawsuit.

Earlier this month, Katherine Jackson was granted a restraining order against her nephew Trent Lamar Jackson following accusations of elder abuse.

So it's no wonder famed Michael Jackson tribute artist, Navi was honored with playing the iconic music legend who tragically passed in 2009 at the age of 50.

The Trinidad native filmed scenes for Lifetime's biopic Michael Jackson: Searching For Neverland on Wednesday.

Navi - who has modified his chin, nose and cheekbones to look like the Grammy Award winner - put on his best Smooth Criminal moves between takes.

There were also child actors on set portraying the late singer's three kids - Paris, Prince and Blanket - who wore colorful feathered and Spider-Man masks.

In November, Prince gave a rare interview with Los Angeles Times where he explained the reason they wore the masks as children.

'My dad spoke to me like an adult. He told us the reason for the masks was he wanted us to have our own life without him,' he explained.

'I don’t think I ever thought about if other kids lived like that when I was younger. But once I knew who he was, I realized it wasn’t normal.'

Meanwhile, filmmakers recreated a mall mob scene as Jackson (Navi) was shielded by his bodyguards while being bombarded by a crowd of fans.
