This is a thing?

From an interview with Terry Gilliam for The Zero Theorem:

The problem to me is, yes, it’s hard to get the money because even though I’m making films with no money, they still want Johnny [Depp] or Brad [Pitt] in it. It’s stupid, it’s ridiculous. The new phrase that’s floating around is you need a “hard-bender” if you're doing a film of a certain size. A "hard-bender" is one with either Tom Hardy or Michael Fassbender and it never stops, it always astonishes me. The nice thing about ["The Zero Theorem"] is Christoph [Waltz], thanks to Quentin [Tarantino]’s films, has become bankable to a certain level and that was fantastic and that’s how we made it; not because of the ideas but because Christoph and I were able to work together. And then I sweetened the load even more with friends like Tilda [Swinton], Matt Damon, and David Thewlis all coming into play.

Saw a few recent pictures and was thinking that he is looking older then he is. Maybe it's the lifestyle or perhaps his work schedule is aging him? Don't get me wrong he is still attractive just looking a bit rough. I also think casting him as Macbeth was an excellent choice. Looking forward to seeing him play opposite Cotillard. I'm curious to see what she will do with the accent.

Shame filmmaker Steve McQueen's latest feature will have its U.S.
premiere at the upcoming New York Film Festival. The Film Society of Lincoln
Center and Film Comment magazine will host the premiere of 12
Years A Slave
at the 51st edition of the festival on October 8. McQueen
will take part in presenting the film with cast members Chiwetel Ejiofor,
Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong’o, Adepero Oduye, Paul Dano and Alfre
Woodard.

12 Years A Slave is based on the memoir of Solomon Northup, a free
black man from upstate New York who was abducted in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and
brought to slave trader James Burch (Paul Giamatti) who sold him to a gentleman
farmer named William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch). He was then sold to a mentally
unbalanced cotton grower, named Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), whose cruelty
embodies the evils of slavery.

John Ridley wrote the screenplay for 12 Years A Slave from
Northup's memoir. Brad Pitt, who is a producer of the film, appears as Canadian
carpenter Samuel Bass in the film's final section.

"I am honored that 12 Years a Slave will be presented at the New York Film
Festival in association with Film Comment," said McQueen. "For
me, this feels like a true home-coming for Solomon as he was from New York and
I'm delighted that his story can be celebrated here."

Added Gavin Smith, New York Film Festival Selection Committee member and
Editor-in-Chief of Film Comment magazine: "Film Comment
is delighted to be able to champion 12 Years A Slave at the New York
Film Festival. This is a powerful work about a subject that remains vital and I
have no doubt that it’s one of the year’s most important films."

Steve McQueen's previous feature Shame had its U.S. debut at the
2011 New York Film Festival. Fox Searchlight will release 12 Years A
Slave
on October 18.

Tickets will be available starting Sunday, September 8 when tickets go on
sale to the general public for the festival.

Chiwetel seems to be assured an Oscar nom. MF's getting some great notices as well and most people think he deserves a best supporting actor nomination.

Also, this happened;

Michael Fassbender just walked into the hotel restaurant in a white robe for breakfast buffet. #telluride #noshame

He gives no ****s.

That's what they said about Shame too! In the end MF spent Oscar night in Hackney. Don't believe the hype.
I hope they both get noms but I won't be expecting it.
Especially not when you consider what kind of members the academy has.

Yes indeed...

It would be nice if one work is acknowledged by one's peers: but an Oscar nod is not necessary to validate outstanding one's film work. Many gifted film people never received that kind of recognition but never the less had exceptional careers.
