I was wondering why Fassbender wasn't included in W's portfolio of their annual "Best Performances" but Lynn Hirschberg, who interviewed them all, gives the reader a clue in the contributors' blurbs, of the reason he's elsewhere with his own section (titled Who Leading Man)

Lynn Hirschberg: There's a specific rhythm to the screening calendar of W's editor at large. "The Cannes film festival is always the beginning of my year", says Hirschberg, who selected the 20 actors and actresses for our annual "Best Performances" portfolio (page 97). "January through March is a slow time for movies -- it's all about the Oscars. In April, you're kind of like, 'Who am I?' Then in May, it's Cannes, and you refocus." This past year, she says, "was a bit flat in terms of films, but I saw some beautiful performances -- in particular, this was the year of Michael Fassbender (page 68). That's the way it is: Sometimes there are really great films, and sometimes there are films with really great parts."
