Memory Lane: What was your first Coach?

My first Coach was a basic bag bought in 1983. I still have it, but don’t use it because it’s too small. I have it in Navy, too, bought about the same time. I used those two bags exclusively for several years. They were big enough then, but not now. We didn’t have cell phones then. In this picture, I had just conditioned it.

My first Coach is a small black Soho bag with signature print. I think I got it in college. I barely used it because it was small and at the time I use my backpacks more. I don't have it anymore. Then I got a Madison Audrey in graduate school. I gave it away to my sil.. I had no idea the strap was removable on the bottom until much later... after I performed minor surgery to the strap... lol

My first Coach was a red City Bag Spectator bought from Marshall Field's with my 1989 or 1990 Christmas bonus check. I'd walked past their Coach counter often but nothing had ever reached out and grabbed me until I saw RED, and I was hooked. Wish I still had it, but it was eventually replaced in my affections by a Sheridan Glenwood in the same color combination. (The picture was found online since the actual bag was donated locally about 15 years ago )

Yes, I have a Thing about red Coaches.

I'm very new to Coach. I got my first one in 2018, a lovely Vintage Penny. This is still one of my favorites out of all my bags.

Last year I got a Nolita 19 from my mum for bday pressie and soon after that (as in, after I fell even more in love with Coach leather) I got my first wallet, a M Zip and now I actually have two Mini Skinnies instead of the one I originally got. Accidentally ordered two from a sale so now I have a pink one as well! :giggle:
Seriously stalking a Field tote, I need a large tote to take over after I gave up Longchamp completely. Waiting for the 100% right Field Tote to appear - no Varsity stripes, size 40, preferrably pink and e/w design. We'll see if Coach will ever make one! :girlsigh:

My first Coach bag was a beautiful navy blue, slightly downsized briefcase that my mother-in-law gave me when I started graduate school in 1980. I loved it and carried it with me to school every day and used it frequently when I got my first job. As time went on it started to stretch out a bit and got scratched so I donated it. Knowing what I do now about rehabbing, I think I could have fixed it up nicely. I should have kept it forever.

My mother-in-law gave me several other Coaches during the eighties including black and BT city bags and a smaller bone colored bag. After she passed away, my father-in-law gave me a bottle green clutch. He never said so but I believe my MIL must have bought it for me before she died and told him to give it to me. He wouldn’t have picked it out himself.

Great thread! Mine was a black Willis. My dad gave it to me for high school graduation in 1994. I still have it but it's packed away so I can't take a picture. Still in great condition though.
Also a black Willis. College graduation gift from 1995 - the first “professional” bag. It spent quite a few years in the back of the closet, but when iPads came around, it became my favorite bag again, fit an iPad perfectly. I still carry it from time to time (now with an iPad mini the bag of choice is Court).

OK, I've got you all beat - my first Coach was a British tan slim satchel from the early 80s - here's the ad from 1979, and yep, I bought it at Macy's. I got it in 1983, and I thought I was going to die (the cost! Holy cow $70 was a lot of money back then!). I carried that bag for at least two years (if not longer) and felt special every time. I recently went back in time to try to figure out why I was carrying such large bags when that slim satchel did me just fine, and it actually helped me cull some of the unneeded stuff and also go back to a hand-carry bag. I just bought a Geometric Pouch from the sale and am looking forward to receiving it. Love that glove-tanned leather.
