LV looks to tap Pharrell Williams

He understands trends, mass appeal, and cross pollination across multiple disciplines. I think that’s a great mix as Virgil's successor at LV. Have people forgotten that Virgil trained as an architect and engineer before becoming a fashion designer? There's room for all, and luxe today understands that. Plus, he's Creative Director, I really doubt people are expecting him to cut patterns himself.

I say, HOORAY and very happy with this announcement! Look forward to seeing what he does!

You know this is actually what happens at a lot of fashion brands? They have a concept, some sketches, and the trained designers under their direction know how to translate these into measurements and patterns. Hence "Creative Director". And Pharrell has worked in fashion before LV. We won't know how involved he is with cutting, tech specs, etc, but , this is not unique to LV.

Isn’t that how it usually goes? Yayoi Kusama drew designs and it was placed on the LV bags.
Not my place, but I think @Mrs.Z meant he may not understand, just initiate, unable to communicate and manage the creative design process with a whole team, it's on him delivering a cohesive vision season after season

I guess he'll have a vertical learning curve for while

Comments on the appointment from industry insiders excerpt:
“Louis Vuitton continues to reinvent the role of a creative director by selecting a maverick,” says Jean Vigneron, consultant at executive search company Egon Zehnder. “This choice is in line with the past creative directors who bought a fresh perspective on fashion. It shows more than ever that Louis Vuitton has become a global luxury lifestyle brand.”

Simon Longland, director of fashion buying at Harrods, says: “I’m intrigued to see Pharrell’s unique sense of personal style and clean-cut maximalism come to life and push the boundaries of the house’s iconic DNA, with the resources, skills, and abilities from the incredibly talented team in the Vuitton atelier, who we have seen deliver successful collections over the past three seasons. This is a fascinating move from Louis Vuitton, who never cease to demonstrate their ability to deliver the unexpected.”

Thanks for sharing the article.

I honestly think Anyone would have a vertical learning curve, stepping into Creative Director of a house like LV! Even if they'd spent their whole careers in the fashion industry! And to be a successful mega producer for that many years and to co-found his own fashion label and run other projects , Pharrell would be well used to communicating with large teams and picking up new skills as he goes along. Of course there'd be many things in a giant heritage atelier that are uniquely different to running a streetwear label and making music. But part of the fun is to see the Creative Director (and team) grow and evolve during their tenure. I really think LV have been spot on with understanding the direction their Menswear needed to go . It is continuing on from Virgil's mark in the best way possible.

Gucci gets an actual designer [Sabato de Sarno] as Creative Director and then there's LV who get's a Hollywood A-lister as Creative Director.
