hello everyone..I would like any info on the rarity of my vanilla anteater skin Lucille de Paris handbag. I inherited it from my 92 year old aunt along with a few other great vintage bags and vintage gloves. My handbag is in great shape. So far from what I have determined by my research online, anteater is quite rare and now on the endangered species list. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks in advance....fondly, the empty nest

What a lovely item to get from your Aunt and though I do not know anything about anteater leather....I do know of Lucille de Paris.
They made exquisite, top quality exotic leather goods.

Any chance that you could post a pic?

Wow! What a beautiful bag! I would absolutely die if I inherited that! I do know that anteater is now considered an endangered species and they did use to make cowboy boots out of anteater but had to stop I think in the late 90's? So that makes your bag that more special! I hope you enjoy her, she's marvelous!

just to clarify- since I work with anteaters, I was really confused by the look of this skin:confused1:. It's the skin of a pangolin (also called a scaly anteater), which is a south east asian species, and not the more common south american anteater- with the long fur, long nose, and big bushy tail. Pangolins are much rarer that the common Giant anteater. Newer research has determined that they are not actually closely related to anteaters, so 'scaly anteater" is a misnomer.
Okay, maybe I'm the only one that cares, :shame: but I did the research so I thought I'd share!

I know that vintage resaler Enokiworld sold a Lucille De Paris alligator bag. According to their website, the brand was actually produced by an American husband and wife team, Lucille and Charles Hahn during the 50s and 60s. They specialized in exotics. I also found more info by Googling. They were located in New York and advertised their bags in such magazines as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. A glance at vintage resales sites sees them being sold for anywhere from $100 to $700 or even more. I suppose it depends on the condition and type of skin used. In any case, it is a gorgeous bag. I wouldn't even think of selling it if were so fortunate to inherit such a treasure!

That's really interesting, thanks for doing that research. And I know what you mean about not selling that bag, an inheritence like that would be worthy of a fire proof safe in my opinion.

Wow - that is different.
