You wonder why they didn’t just make pants with all that fabric in the 1600s to keep their legs warm???I am going to (disrespectfully) disagree with GQ. I take a magazine that can be bought off to give Meghan Markle an award with a massive grain of salt. Looking up the definition of a kilt, it is definitely a garment that is wrapped around the body as opposed to a skirt, which is one piece. When I visited Scotland I was told that the traditional kilt used many yards of cloth for the pleating. ( I was also told multiple kilt and sheep jokes that can’t be printed here lol!). In theory a kilt may also be used as a cloak.

however- I presume that what was meant by @gracekelly (apologies for speaking for you!) -is that Lt. Col. Thompson might've "fast-tracked" the "normal" routes taken to promotion(s) by way of his exceptional abilities, etc., which is rare -but not unheard of. It would be a tremendous honor to be promoted so "quickly", yes, but not impossible. That's what would make him "exceptional" and worthy of going through the ranks quicker than most. Promotion would not be limited to what would normally be prescribed but that's as it should be with people that present skills, talents and abilities beyond expectation.
I suspect that's how he gained his position in the first place. By all accounts, he is talented, steadfast, capable, intelligent. His beauty has very likely been a strong consideration in helping to open doors, but I would defy anyone that would suggest that he hasn't gotten to be in such close proximity to the crown so quickly without some very notable sacrifices and hard work.

This thread started off in a very lighthearted fashion. As of late it has veered ro the realm of the pedantic. We all like and admire Lt. Col. Johnny, and perhaps we can keep it at that. More pictures of cute guys wearing kilts are always appreciated.
There are many handsome men, some in JT own regiment, ( in kilts) but the LtCol has something special I can’t quite explain or even understand. Oh my.
I would LOVE to know when the Royal family first noticed it, him???
He was in command of the guard at Balmoral for 3 years and as such she had some contact with him at the inspection ceremonies.
Then 5 Scot had duty at BP 2-3 times. ???
He seems to be away from his family a lot which is difficult for all.
